Boys Basketball

The boys high school team lost last night. End of the road I guess.

Congrats to the team for making it as far as they did. Even with all the injuries, suspensions, and coaching problems they still had a great year.

Thanks to a team that got it together under Coach Brooks. Let's bring this coach back next year.

Too bad Chuck Mirr got the shaft. We probably would have won that game.

Yep, sure missed that "old school coaching" technique of ridicule and moral crushing yelling at the players. That’s works so well?

Sorry, IMO, it’s time for a new direction in the coaching position.

Perhaps the parents and players who incited this inside riot against Chuck Mirr could share some specific, credible details about why he's supposedly not a good coach. It's interesting that after 28 years of coaching basketball, only NOW is there a “problem” with his philosophy.

Seems to me there were a few crybaby parents and players who had some personal ax to grind. Instead of working out their concerns legitimately or maturely, they sold their own coach down the river by going behind his back to get rid of him. Where was the school's administrative leadership on this one? Were Ken and Jon too busy buying real estate to keep the situation under control?

So please, enlighten us. What exactly were these so-called "problems" with Coach Mirr? Be specific. Tell us exactly who, what, when and where. Then maybe you'll have some credibility.

If the three examples mentioned in tha Ripon paper were not enough for you to see he was bullying the boys and swearing at them, then you have your head in the sand. Go ask any of the players if you want to know.

Anonymous said...

The only example that I read in the Ripon paper was the use of the word "dough-head". The previous blogger asked for specific examples of alleged abuse, there still are no responses to this request.

While I do not condone swearing, I can also understand the usefullness of a well-chosen word in the heat of a game. Sports are very emotional activities for players, coaches and the audience. It is the coaches job to inspire, and to push the kids past their comfort level. That is how great athletes are made. These kids are in High School, not grade school. It is sad they they have buckled under the pressure to excel at their sport.

Anonymous said...

Telling kids they need their asses whipped and which one wants to step forward first is not an appropiate coaching tool.

Anonymous said...

Sorry, but this isn't first grade basketball. Any good high school coach should chew out his players when they make dumb mistakes. Green Lake’s varsity basketball players (and their parents) really ought to have thicker skin than that. Hint, hint, Dawn Morgan. Should we get rid of every coach who yells at us or our kids?

Anonymous said...

I agree, if every coach who used questionable language or yelled at their team was fired, it would be the end of sports in the world.

Anonymous said...

So that's what we want to instill in our young people... that in order to motivate and inspire others, it's best you swear at them and ridicule them? It helps to "thicken up" their skin.

It's true, the world is a tough place and a thick skin can be helpful. I for one, happen to think there are better ways for young people to learn these things. The road of hard knocks is not always the best one to travel.

Funny how we still haven't been given any specific, credible examples of why Chuck had to be removed immediately.

Anonymous said...

If Chuck Mirr was truly such an abusive coach, then why was he hired (once again) to coach the team? Any way you look at this, the administration is the one to hold responsible. They did not handle this situation responsibly or fairly.

If these kids weren't molly-coddled by their parents they wouldn't need to have their skins thickened.

Honestly, for many years now, I doubt there was any real thought given to who coaches what. Chuck's always done boy’s basketball (28yrs?). Did anyone else speak up to say they want the boy’s b-ball coach position? Do you think there has ever been and end of season coaching evaluation? I doubt it. When there have been losing seasons, has anyone ever asked; should we go with this coach again next year? I doubt that as well.

Unless a coach resigns who really gives it any thought? Do you really think anyone at the school is sitting down and asking the question: How can we recruit the best coaches for our sports programs? Not really, case in point, lack of current track coach. No one stepped up, so our kids our being coached by Princeton coaches. Does anyone really care? Being a coach is a huge time commitment. Is the money really there or is it more like an honorarium? Translated that means, we can’t pay you what you’re time and experience is worth, so we’ll give you what we can afford. Being a small financially strapped school, I don’t see it being done any differently.

If anyone at the school knows if the practice has been done any differently, I'd sure like to hear a rebuttal.

Right. The school administration is responsible for the basketball coaching fiasco.

Oh--and the school administration is also responsible for the current economic crisis, global warming, 9-11, world hunger, oil shortages, blah blah blah.

Anonymous said...

Come on now...just take your adderall and stay on task. No need to get all snarky when somebody hits the nail on the head and calls the administration out for another blunder. You have to understand that just like in a business, the administrators or principals of that business (academic) entity ARE responsible for all that happens under their watch. It is their JOB to oversee these things and the simple fact that things escalated to the point they did IS their fault. Plain and simple - no real gray areas.

Anonymous said...

No Snarky, you are dead wrong.

Schools are more than a business. Administrators are not responsible for every minutiae--just like parents are not responsible for everything their kids do. Everyone knows that. It is easy to hold lofty standards when they are intended for someone else.

Anonymous said...

Sorry, Ken and Jon. YOU are dead wrong.

This school needs leadership. Leadership is not letting the inmates run the prison.

When a few pissed-off basketball players circulated a petition against Chuck Mirr, the administration should have had enough decency and maturity to sit everyone down and try to work it out. Instead, the administration immediately took the students’ side, held a secret meeting with players only, and then blindsided Chuck with the “concerns.” Then the administration smirked “It’s not our fault” when Chuck felt coerced to walk away.

That’s exactly what Pontius Pilate did to Jesus: Pilate gave in to mob rule, washed his hands of the situation, and then sat by as someone got crucified.

Excellent post above. Isn’t this the same administration that hired Chuck two seasons ago?

Why would they let their own employee twist in the wind just to make a few teenagers happy? Kind of makes you wonder who’s running the show at that school.

We’re still waiting for a specific list of concerns about Chuck, by the way.

Warning – Humor intended ahead.

Wow – I never thought Chuck’s firing/dismissal/walking away, whatever, would make it on this blog as a comparison to the Crucifixion of Christ! Well, three days passed and Chuck didn’t rise back to the position of coach? Did any player see him in town and not know who he was? That would really make some news!

It certainly didn't surprise me that e jon tracy handled this matter so poorly. Since his arrival in Green Lake, Tracy's attempts at acting all buddy buddy with the students have been anything but professional. He is supposed to be an authority figure in the school and instead tried to be oh so cool. Let us not forget his wonderful speech at graduation several years back. All in all, he's been a total failure at the job he was hired to do.

Anonymous said...

Ever notice how Tracy "bumps knuckles" with students rather than shaking hands like a grownup?

Anonymous said...

He only does the knuckle bump because you need an opposable thumb in order to really shake hands. And when did parents not become responsible for the actions of their children, or business owners not held responsible (legal liability) for the actions of their employees. Not sure where you work but hopefully there aren't too many lawyers around to find you wrong.

Anonymous said...

OK. You are right.

When your kid gets busted for smoking pot, you are responsible for his habit. Or your kid gets pregnant. Right again. You are responsible for them not using birth control.

Sure glad you cleared that up.

Looks like Ken and/or Jon are trying to confuse the situation by saying “It’s the students’ fault, not ours.”

Parents can’t always control what their kids do. School administrators can’t always control what students do. What matters is how parents and school administrators react when students get out of line. Do we let the children continue to run the show, or do we teach them about respect for adults and authority?

School administrators should respond to a student uprising with calm sensibility and communication rather than just siding with the students and blindsiding a coach with the students’ little “concerns.” It’s really not good PR for a school administration to watch as a coach’s own players run him out, and then claim “It’s the students’ fault, not ours.”

No, the Green Lake administration didn’t force Chuck out. But the administration certainly didn’t help the situation by standing by and allowing mob rule. What a great lesson for our kids. There were only a handful of games left in the season. Why would the administration allow this?

When Lee Zarnott was principal in Green Lake, he never would have put up with students thinking they can choose their coach based on a popularity contest. That may be how it works for the current administration and a handful of screwy teenagers in the Green Lake school, but not elsewhere.

Anonymous said...

The administration was just as "blindsighted" by the petition as Chuck was. No ones to blame for Chuck leaving but Chuck himself! People writing on this blog are always talking about holding others accountable for their actions so what makes Chuck any different.

Anonymous said...

Excellent post. I agree with you wholeheartly! The man quit of his own free will. How anybody can blame this on the administration is just irrational.

Anonymous said...

The point is, the administration didn’t handle it maturely.

Instead of having a secret meeting with the players and then slamming Chuck with a boatload of “ammunition,” the administration should have had the decency to meet TOGETHER with the players and Chuck and try to work it out. It’s obvious the administration immediately sided with these teenagers. Chuck was left out to dry by his own players and the administration.

Anonymous said...

I don't know why we even continue to try to explain it to these folks, it's like talking to Ernest T. Bass.

Anonymous said...

Let's add some drama by claiming there was some sort of "secret" meeting between the kids and the administration. Give me a break! The kids came to the administration in strict confidence to discuss the situation with them first before addressing the matter with Chuck in the room. That makes perfect sense to me. All you anonymous bloggers should be able to relate...they feared retribution from coach Mirr so they wanted the initial contact without him there, which the administration was correct in doing. It seems some of you are hypocrites - what makes it ok to send anonymous blogs because you fear retribution from the administration but it's not ok for the kids to request a meeting without the coach present because they fear retribution from him. Obviously these kids have learned to avoid direct communication with people in authority they have a disagreement with from their parents examples.

Anonymous said...

I agree...Chuck would have gone bat-crap crazy on those little dough-heads if he was there.
Now let me get this straight: The students / players feared retribution? And, "People don't put their names on these blogs because they 'fear retribution from the administration'". Wow, how far reaching is the power of this administration. Whomever blogged this seems to really be afraid of something or someone. What is it we don't know about Green Lake School District? Does Bates have some compromising evidence on civic leaders (do we have any of those types around here?)to be used in the event he is called on the carpet for his mis-administration of the school? Is e.jon really from another planet (this has been hypothesized before)? Come to think of it, I have seen strange lights emanating from the school late at night - but not on Fridays because e.j is rarely there).

Now it all makes sense. We are at the mercy of this administration and school board and truly can't do anything about it because we are all intimidated and, yes, FEAR retribution from them. You are right, let's not try to get things back on course with the school. We'll just continue to let them (the administration and school board) have free reign, continuing their hodge-podge effort and everything will be okay...it will all get better on it's own.
PS: Has anyone noticed if the sky is still falling?

Wow! Major brain damage above blogger. Maybe a little to much LSD in the sixties.

It was meant as sarcasm / cynicism. Sorry if I offended anyone's sense of reason...I incorrectly assumed most people would have the intellect to understand that aspect.

Anonymous said...

The administration DID have a secret meeting with the 14 boys who signed the petition. Read the newspaper. E. Jon said so.

Anonymous said...

I understood that you intended to be sarcastic and humorous. I just thought you did a awful job at both.

Hey...where has everyone gone? I go out of town for a couple of days and nobody cares about this blog any longer. This is crazy...I was the talk of the town a couple of weeks back and now nobody will talk about me. Come on folks...make believe Ken Bates or e. jon did something dastardly again concerning boys basketball...or even if it doesn't concern boys basketball...we can make believe it does and get everybody all 'lathered' up about something that isn't quite true. After all - it seems to be a Green Lake tradition.
