Library Book Fair from December 3-10!!!

The library is having a book fair from Dec. 3-10. This is not the book sale they have several times a year but NEW books. The prices range from $1-$25. There is a LARGE selection for children and make great Christmas gifts. The Book Fair is upstairs in the regular library. While you are there stop and see the art show and check out a DVD. Stop in and see how your tax dollars should be spent before you go to the school to vote no on the land annexation and how your tax dollars should not be spent. The library is open until 6:00 on Wednesday. Tuesday and Thursdays until 7:00. Go support your library. It has lots of GREAT stuff.

I was in the library today and pleasantly surprised by the book fair. Chief is right, there is a lot of great stuff there. It's like having a childrens bookstore right here in Green Lake for a week! If you have any kids to shop for the holidays, you will be sure to find a fitting gift there.

You are right about the book fair being nice, but don't plan on trying to look something up on one of the computers. Does the library advertise free afterschool daycare or what! It's great that the kids have a safe place to go. At least the building is a safe place, but who's to say if what they are doing online is safe or not.

The Knowledge Emporium has wonderful books for children, too. Check it out.

The Knowledge Emporium is a nice little store, but I always forget that they are there. Perhaps they should move to a more visible storefront on Mill St. There are enough empty ones to choose from. With a nice display window, they would definitely get more walk in business and have easier access for their delivery services. Don't they ship FedX or something? They are almost invisible in the building they are in.

Blog #2 is correct about trying to use a computer at the library. It's like a video arcade and teen chat room in there. I would feel differently if these kids were doing homework, but that isn't the case.

Knowledge Emporium is a gem! It is up to Sharon what she wants to do with it. I have enjoyed it for years! Especially the fine help from Sharon herself.

I agree; if you want to use the computers, you better get there before three o'clock. The library has become a free after school daycare and the kids waste their time on the internet. I've watched, very few of them are doing homework. Facebook, IM chat and games seem to be the priority for them. And yes, I've seen some on what I would consider very inappropriate porn and adult content sites. It’s sad we let this go on. Their parents have to sign an approval if they are under a certain age for them to use the computers and be on the internet, but their parents are not there to see what they're looking at.
Ask any of the clerks, they'll tell you what the kids are looking at. I understand they can monitor what their looking at, but are not allowed to say anything. Sure wouldn't want to offend the poor kiddie’s rights! As a parent, I'd like a consenting adult to offend my kid’s rights if they were looking at something inappropriate. Remember the days when more adults than just your parents taught you right from wrong? Now, OMG, we might offend someone. We live in a world that even if it’s morally or ethically wrong, but within your rights, then that makes it OK. What a sad society we have become.

The kids can use the computers for whatever they choose to as far as I'm concerned. It really isn't any of your business if they are playing video games, facebook, etc. At that age that is what is important to them. Other people don't get choose other peoples priorities, even teens. As long as they stay within the time lmit it is none of someone elses business what they do. It isn't good enough for some of you people that they are even in the libarary.

Wow! At what age do you think porn is important to our kids??

I think the viewing of porn or other adult content sites, i.e. the occult, graphic gothic life sites, adult oriented chat rooms, sites that deal with illegal activities, etc, should not be allowed to be viewed in public places.
Some "rights" should not be practiced in public places. We have all kinds of laws that limit our rights in many ways, no public intoxication, although it’s legal to be drunk. No disturbing the peace, play your stereo or have a party at any volume level, until it bothers someone. Lewd and indecent behavior, do want you want inside your own home with yourself or a willing adult partner, just please don’t do it in public. These are all in place to protect us from having to deal with the public enjoying their “rights” too much. But, public place viewing of inappropriate websites within the site of minors or others who take offense is for some reason an OK thing?
I for one don’t think it’s proper to have in a public place.

agreed!! the reason the kids are going to the library to go to these sites is because they are blocked from their own home computers! it should be no different at the library- even the video stores have "private" rooms for x-rated materials that you have to be over 21 to go into....

I am glad that this problem is finally being addressed here. I hate the fact that my tax dollars go to the library so that kids can play games and chat. This was never the intent of a library. Whatever happened to reading books and doing homework? The parents of these kids obviously don't care what their kids are doing, or else they naively believe that their kids are not doing these things. How ironic that the adults who are paying their taxes to the library can hardly get on a computer because there is a kid on every computer playing a game. If there are any time limits for the computers, they sure are not being enforced. And as far as freedom of speech or whatever BS rationalization the library uses not to use filters on the computers, how is looking at porn in public considered freedom of speech? Please explain that one to me.

Wait a minute, don't think they're completely ignoring the problem, they're not. I've been at the library and seen the clerks enforce the time limits when others are waiting, so they are doing what they can, but they can't 100% monitor the kids and the computers. They have a lot of other duties. I think the time limit is one hour. Anyhow, when you're waiting, it can seem like eternity.

playing games on the computer is the kids right. The clerks are not babysitters. They do have filters. No body is watching porn at the library. I for one think the rest of you spend too much time on your email. Stop thinking this is 1952 and someone else thinks they know what is best for someone else.

"No body is watching porn at the library" yeah right... they sure the heck are... not just kids, but adults as well. You need to stop thinking it is still 1952 and wake up to what goes on in kids lives today. No, it is not the same as it was when we were kids in 1952. You best get seriously involved in your kid’s lives. There are way too many Bad choices out there for them to make and plenty of folks willing to help them make the wrong decisions.

Ask anyone who works with youth today, it will blow you mind! What they watch, what they talk about, how they talk, how quickly they grow up, become "active", what's on their cell phones. Just go on "My Space" or "Facebook" and look at the pictures they post, the comments they write. It's very common to see GD this and F that. Look at the crap on TV today that kids have grown up with. Is there a TV show today that doesn't involve sex? We have gotten so used to immorality and unethical acts that we're numb to them and unfortunately, to willing to accept it as a way of life.

Glad to hear some of you have been to the Book Fair and that so many of you have opinions about the library. Please allow me to address some of the concerns/questions raised by other commenters:

1) The library is open for use by everyone, with no regard for age, and therefore if the children have permission from their parents to use the Internet they have as much right to that use as anyone.

2) We do not assign different values to game playing or chatting or following an EBAY auction or sending email or doing research. Most people would not want us monitoring their computer activity that closely and making a judgement call.

3) We have an acceptable use internet policy and we stick to it. Pornographic images and games are not acceptable use. We do have folks who ignore this policy. When we find out about it, we remind them about what is acceptable and what is not acceptable in a public space. We give second chances. If the same person messes up again, they lose computer privileges at the library for an amount of time.

4) We do limit the amount of time that any individual may use the computer on a given day. The limit is an hour, unless no one is waiting. We try hard to keep the resources available to everyone, and to that end made the building wireless many years ago and offer patrons 16 or older the use of one of our six laptop computers in addition to the desk top machines. Everything works on a first-come, first-served basis.

5) There are very few other places for young people in Green Lake to go. We're happy to have them come here.

6) We treasure the Knowledge Emporium, too, and love Sharon.

If you have questions or concerns about the library, please talk with me. I can only address your concerns if I hear about them. Thanks. Linda

I hope "Oh wake up" realizes there are a lot of really, really good kids out there. Let's not put them all in the group he/she writes about, although some valid concerns were raised.

Thank you Linda for all you and your staff do at the Library, depsite anything written here, it's truly one of our best community assets.
