On the front page of the paper this week is another article on the school board buying land for education purposes with a grant. This grant will not cover the total expense of the the land and school board is looking into the "possibility" of other grants to help purchase this land. What about future maintenance of the land? What about the costs we aren't sure of at this point but we know will show up after the land is purchased and need to be paid for. I am really at a loss about why the school needs this at all when one of the assets this rural school district has plenty of is students with access to land. If this was some larger suburban/urban area then is purchase might be a great asset. I don't see it here. Then, under the article for the purchase of this land is an article on the shortfall the school district is going to have for its budget. This is getting crazier.
As far as I know the school is getting 10 acres at the ABA in the development. Most of the kids in this town already have plenty of access to land. What board should be spending money on is more class trips out of town to see what else is going on the world. They don't need this land.
If you care about your tax dollars go to the school board meeting on December 3 and vote NO to this ridiculous purchase by the school board.

The headline in today's Ripon newspaper on page 7 reads:
Referendum likely needed in 2010
The story goes on to say that updated projections "show the district in the red $751,000 in 2010 - 2011 and $1.15 million in 2100-2012... the updated figures are worse that officials hoped."
And now the school wants to dish out taxpayer money to buy land because is is a "huge opportunity"???
The article goes on to say that "trimming three-quarters of a million dollars for 2010-2011 is probably more than we would be able to handle," according to financial consultant Mona Aumann.
Ken Bates says "nobody likes raising taxes, but operating costs keep going up".
Why should operating costs keep going up when enrollment has declined dramatically?
The administration and school board members responisble for these failures should do the right thing and step down from their positions immediately. If this was a business, they would be fired.
The school needs to be managed in a fiscally responsible fashion, not the out of control spending that has been taking place since Bates took over. Ironic that they can push through salary increases for the administration and then cut the tech program to the bare bones. This is hogwash.
Let's figure out how to manage the school within it's operating budget. First of all, get rid of e jon tracey. He is the main reason that enrollement has dropped and that so many fine teachers have left Green Lake schools. He never should have been hired in the first place. Ken Bates can take over the role of principal in addition to his very taxing job as administrator for a school of 303 students. If he can't handle it, find someone who can.
Cut Ded Kneser's job out completely. There are others in the school who can decide cirriculum with the school board and parental volunteers.
Eliminating those two jobs will help considerably. Jan Hauer can either take a pay cut or step down and allow a new guidance counselor to work at the school for appromimately half of what Ms. Hauer gets paid. Ken Bate's salary should also be cut, he makes over $100,000 per year, WAY too much. Salary should be performance based, and Bate's performance has been very substandard. Did you know that many of the school administration works a 4 day work week at the school, as they typically do not show up on Fridays? e jon tracey has missed 8 Fridays since school started in September.
The first and second graders need to be combined in one classroom, with the elimination of a teacher. We have too much teaching staff for the size of our student enrollment.
These are just a few ideas to save the school money without lowering the quality of the education. Drastic changes need to be made.
Please attend the meeting on Wednesday, December 3rd at 6:30 in the school library. The notion of purchasing land for the school when they cannot operate responsibly is sickening. Taxpayers, revolt!
You'd never know this news by reading the Green Lake paper. All they have about the school is stupid fluff. If you want the facts before this important meeeting, be sure to read a credible source.

20 Years ago, Princeton schools came to GL school board with an idea of merger or working together, our response, oh no, we want our own school. This year, Markesan came, our response, oh no, we're going a different direction.
It's going to be really sad when our surrounding school districts merge and get their acts together and see the future with regional cooperative schools. I wonder what their response will be when were the ones at their door with our hat in our hands.
I see Ripon is looking at some big deficits next year as well. Maybe it's time to talk to them about doing something together to ease the financial pain. A lot of our kids have gone to Ripon on their own anyway. Oh, but wait, I forgot, we're going a different direction. Yep, it will be different all right.
If the December 3rd meeting is anything like the regular GL School Board meetings, it'll be a three-ring circus with no organization or control. People need to start showing up. It's astonishing how much time the Board wastes. Yet nothing ever seems to get done. Maybe if more parents attended on a regular basis, the Board would have some accountability. Let's not allow these people to run their own show. I'm tired of being one of only a few parents who attend.
We need to remind this Board who they answer to. We do NOT support this silly Sunnyside purchase just so a few school leaders can feel important and "one-up" other area districts. The Green Lake school is already getting land for free in the ABA because the school was able to manipulate the county into forcing Lindenwood to give away 6 to 8 acres. How un-American. This is a free county, yet Lindenwood has to fork over good land just so the school can feel big.
But apparently, that's not enough for this Board. In the midst of a financial crunch and possible referendum, the district wants to buy $230,000 in land out at Sunnyside. To do what? Some little biology study? Raking leaves? What an absolute joke.
Show up on December 3rd and vote this stupid idea DOWN.

It is incredible that this is what it took to finally make the citizens of Green Lake stand up and say "no more." Many people do not know the half of what has become of the school district under this administration. Teachers (especially those who have left) who are not in the "blessed" group could tell you about plenty of unheard of practices and decisions that have been made that have nothing, absolutely nothing, to do with the well-being of students.
Don't you wonder why Bates would leave a district like Columbus to come to a small district like GL? He hightailed it out of there when the heat started to get turned up on his out of control spending there.
As for ejon Tracy, it took his last district a good three years to build morale back up after he "left" there.

Our whole nation faces a very uncertain financial future. The entire economic world is in vast turmoil. Experts predict that it could take many years to recover from our nation's financial dilemma. We might be entering into a historic depression. There are many certainties.
Why our community would consider buying land at such a critical time in our nation's history is beyond me. For teaching purposes, the school already has designated land to meet it's purposes at the ABA.
