Karen Land & Borage at the Library

Karen Land gave a great talk at the library Saturday morning. Her dog Borage waited for treats and wandered the the shelves looking for a good read.

THANK YOU TO OUR GREAT LIBRARY for offering such an interesting, knowledgeable and fun program - for young and old!

Listening to and seeing Karen and Borage was an ABSOLUTELY AMAZING, fun educational experience!

Green Lake is very fortunate to have such an outstanding library and staff! THANK YOU!

can't the library host an event that us normal people would be interested in? like how to roll your own cigarettes to save money, or how to mow grass on the diagonal.

This event was great! 1149 miles in just under 14 days in sub zero temps! What an accomplishment. That's 83 miles a day on a dog sled! Just think, the winner traveled 128 miles per day! People around here complain about getting their car to go to Kmart in the winter!

Sorry Rodger, don't know what we can do to help you out. Maybe you should have paid attention in class better? If you skipped class, you should have learned how to roll your own on the streets like the rest of us did.

I've heard that if you mow your grass on a diagonal you can actually use the clippings to roll your own smokes...Something for Rodger to consider (just make sure you've cleaned up after your dog before mowing...could be a very harsh smoke).
Excellent presentation - many thanks to the Library and the staff who helped put this program together. Many more people should take advantage of the wonderment that is the Caestecker Library...we are extremely lucky to have it in our community.

happy to know that g.l. is home to so many brainyacts. what i mean is the green lake library thinks that it is something special. i would rather see our library in an old run down building with thousands of books that we owned. not in a new million dollar building (that we must kiss mr. money bag's ass)with no books, hundreds of soft porno movies, and library friends that think they are Gods gift to me.i don't know why all of you think this library is so great. i spend my time at real city libraries like berlin, markesan, princeton, and ripon.

And Rodger, we are happy that you do so...must not have cleaned up the 'mess' before you tried that rollin'-ur-own trick...talk about a brainiac.
There is no connection to Mr. Caestecker other than the name...it is a Public Library.

We, who actually appreciate the gift are thankful for the generous donation...something 'given' to a community which has come to expect such things from those who are better off financially. And, we are thankful for the library staff and the Friends who are committed to providing such a wonderful educational and informational outlet.

Unfortunately, there seem to be many like you who don't know what you have and take it for granted.

There are lots and lots of books inside the Green Lake Library. I was there recently, and I saw shelf after shelf of books. They was all over the place! Goodness me-oh-my-oh. So many books, I could never read em all in my lifetime. Mercy sakes alive.

And movies up the whazoo, every movie you ever heard of, right there in the public library. When I was a young'un, the library just had books, but nowadays there is a movie for everybody. Don't need to go to no rental store no more. Pretty damn good deal if you's ask me.

I don't know what this Rodger feller is talking about, reckon he must not visit the library too often, or he wouldn't say such things.

I actually see'd Rodger at the libary once. He was trying to read a book on the diagonal but jus' couldn't figure it out. So he just ended up checking out some 'soft porn' movies and went home to roll his own....such a lonely feller!

I hope he finds true happiness in some run down building that owns it's own books. I just wish the library would stop having those annual sales where they sell all those books they don't own to help offset the cost of bringing entertaining, informative and interesting guest like Karen Land to the library for the benefit of the public. That darn library is out of control (Please, keep it up!

I like the library as it is but i don't like the library snobs. why is there a big n***** fence around that lot that mr money bags owns. keep the nice people of green lake out. that's my property! why is it ok for that sidewalk to never be shoveled in winter, because it's mr. moneybags sidewalk! oh yes there are lots of books lots of obsolete out dated books from the 70's and 80's. all the good books are on waiting lists. buy one book and past it around between libraries. i am tired all all you local meatheads that want someone else to pay for things for this town. that is why we have this disfunction around here.

Oh...poor, confused Rodger. I guess socialism is alive and well in your world.
With regard to the lot next door to the City of Green Lake PUBLIC library, Mr. Moneybags should have the choice of putting a fence around property he owns...it's a persons right as an owner of that land.
So instead of bizatching about MMB (Mr. you know who) why not thank him next time you see him for his wonderful generosity in giving (yes, real, down-to-earth, no strings attached, 'giving) the city of Green Lake, and it's residents a wonderful facility.

Now, as a public building, owned by the city, you bring up good questions such as the books and the snow removal.

As with all libraries, not just those in the Winnefox (sp?) system, there is always book sharing. It doesn't make sense for every library to own every book...not economically feasible. There is even a process the libraries go through when books aren't being used ('circulated') and they are pulled from the shelves and sold (I think there is a book sale this week).
I do think there are way too many videos at the library...it seems as though the Caestecker is in competition with BlockBuster or Netflix. Real overkill with that part of the program.

Last, but not least, isn't it interesting that the library, a CITY owned building, does not have the CITY personnel do any snow removal, OR, for that matter, any grass cutting/maintenance work. According to the City of Green Lake website, the library workers (director, clerks, custodian) are all CITY workers. Yet, the city doesn't do any snow removal. I've been to the library after a snowstorm and literally fallen on my arse because the sidewalks weren't cleared. When I inquired about it the poor library clerk apologized that she hadn't yet found time to shovel snow. Can you believe the City WON'T take care of the snow removal in front of their building and they expect the librarians to do the shoveling.

Wait until someone falls and REALLY hurts themselves...then the city can fight a lawsuit for negligence on their part causing bodily harm. How can they (Mayor Chuck, Glen McCarty, etc.) let this go on...paying for a city employee to drive their little John Deere snowremoval machine around a quarter of a block would be a lot cheaper than a lawsuit.

Come on City...open your eyes and take care of one of the few remaining worthwhile things in this soon-to-be-forgotten town.

Oh, and Rodger, you might do well to check out one of the books at the library that never gets old...it's called a dictionary and might help you with some of your obvious shortcomings. Not looking for a literary genius but for someone constantly b'tching about the library you could pay a bit more attention to detail.

In case there is still any misunderstanding, Mr. Caestecker does not own the library. He donated the building very generously to the city. He does own the lot next to the library, and several other properties in the area. Green Lake is fortunate to have such a gracious benefactor, the library is one of the only good things about Green Lake. We would be sorely lacking without it.

Sadly, the issue of the city not taking care of the building or grounds has been an on-going dilemma. I can't understand how the city government figures that they are not responsible for maintaining their property! Ms. Garfunkle is correct, one day there will be a lawsuit after someone falls, and then the blame game will shift into full gear. If you look on the county website, the owner of the property is listed as the City of Green Lake. It is finally time for the CITY to take responsibility for what is theirs.
