This is information is from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. This area currently has an unemployment rate of about %5.9, ending December 2008, for the Fond du Lac Area which is the closest to the Green Lake area that are currently on record. The national unemployment figures came out today.
I am just wondering what is going on out there with local jobs and how secure people feel about their jobs right now.

Good point Chiefster! Just think, if all the misguided hot air and energy put into the school district posts were focused towards the local economy? Think of how well off we would be? The school district is extremely important, what the blow hards that think they know everything don't realize is that if the local economy were stable the schools would have plenty of funding and students. Until we have something to offer in this area, our schools, economy, downtown and jobs will suffer. How will our tax base ever grow? How can we expect new families to move here?
Folks, we are just seeing the tip of the iceberg!
Forget about Wendy Schultz, Ken Bates, Chuck Mirr, Mike Weust, etc., we are on a very slippery slope that may not end soon or pretty for GL. We need an immediate "about face" if we are going to survive.
I have heard several rumors of local businesses that are large employers, who are considering closing at the end of 2009. Some are run by seasonal/out of town, smart people. If these last remaining anchors pull out, end of story! We think because we were born here none of this affects us. It affects every single one of us. Your home is your biggest investment and in many cases may provide funds for retirement. Wait til you try and sell, now or in the future, see where your values are vs 10-15 years ago. We have lost market value years before the recent meltdown. Get off your _ss and on your feet people, get involved. Align yourself and talk with smart business people that understand the issues. These people approach problems with a business view not an uneducated emotional point of view. Arm yourself with knowledge and a fresh new attitude, this is the fight of our lives.
This is a great post. The previous poster is right, we need to focus our energy on other areas that are more worthy of our time.
I hear the library and other internet hot spots are full of people working on their resume and doing internet job searches.
It's tough out there. I'm still working, although I classify myself as "underemployed" working for a lot less money than I made a few years ago. If you are working, you should be doing all you can to get yourself out of debt. Credit cards and other unessential loans (furniture, TV's,etc) will kill you if you lose your job. Cut out all unessential spending and pay off those debts. I know that's not what businesses that sell these items want to hear, but we can't keep over extending ourselves.
