Spring Grove Gun Incident

I've been watching the incident on Spring Grove Road with a mild fascination. If you don't know what I'm talking about, it involves the 79 year old woman who held a gun on the policeman trying to check on her in her home after health and human services called them to see how she was. At its most elemental level, isn't the point of owning a weapon self protection in your own home? No wonder she pulled a gun on the cop. She is 79, its late at night and someone is trying to break in as far as she knows. Now she is being charged with a class H felony. And the odd part of this is I am generally for some sort of gun control but this is when I would want a gun.

I couldn't agree more! After reading the article in today's paper, the main question in my mind is why Human Services involved the police at all. Did this woman have a history of self-neglect? I can appreciate the fact that there was concern for the woman's health, but where do we draw the line? Once the police arrived and noted the fact than interior lights were on as well as the television, they could have assumed that things were okay and not invaded the peaceful sanctity of the infirmed. The fact that they are charging her with a felony is ludicrous! They should send her a written apology and a dozen roses for the trouble they caused. I know they meant well, but really!

I believe that she was known to have gun and maybe that is why the police were called, because why would you put an unarmed social worker at risk, especially if this lady was not taking her meds properly. And we don't always get the full story from the paper.

Mel, perhaps you should go down to the courthouse and get a copy of the criminal complaint for this case to find out that what was written WAS 'the full story.' Can we lay off the sweeping generalizations already?!

This is a hilarious story - almost like a bad paperback novel. "It was a dark and stormy night on Spring Grove Road..."
The cops are called, the sheriff comes out, the SWAT team surrounds your house, all to find out if you're "OK in there." I agree with Frogger - leave 'er alone! The woman has a second amendment right to bear arms, as she said. If she's living alone and strange men (who say they're the police, but who knows in this day and age of scams) come to her country home at night, and she's sick...seems like common sense to take a protective measure.

Anonymous who responded to Mel, either you are a cop or a journalist. Not all criminal complaints are accurate.

Hey ANONYMOUS,

Since you seem to have a lot more time on your hands then the rest of us, why don't put the criminal complaint on the blog...that way we can determine for ourselves if the story is accurate..usually the Green Lake Repeater isn't the best news source...but that is not a News Flash!

Has anyone ever been by a home where the lights are on as well as the television; however, the person inside is found dead. . . I would rather have the police bust my house up than leave me because my lights and t.v. were on.

If someone is coming to my door late at night and I'm feeling threatened , you bet your sweet *@$ I'm gonna have my gun out and let them try to charge me..Why is it that the common folk don't have any rights? Now a days, guess we can't be sitting around watching tv without someone busting in and arresting you for protecting your own self....Seems like a bad episode of Hill St. Blues or something!!.DID IT EVER OCCUR TO THEM TO CALL FIRST? Perhaps she would have answered the damn phone, possibly could have avoided this embarrassing situation for law enforcement.... I'm just saying...
