Burning Ban

There is currently a county wide burning ban for those who haven't heard yet. They are being pretty strict about enforcing this ban so check with your governmental body before burning anything.

Once the ban is lifted, you will need a permit to burn. BURNING TRASH IS ALWAYS ILLEGAL, PERIOD!

You are prohibited from burning garbage, plastics, shingles, foam, furniture, rubber products, vinyl products, oil-based products, and painted or stained wood.

Allowable burns (with permit) include brush, leaves, needles, grass, clean wood, unrecyclable paper and unrecyclable cardboard.

Debris burning should always be your last alternative. Consider alternatives like composting. (The city of Green Lake and the town of Brooklyn both have recycling centers for leaves, grass and other yard waste.) If you still choose to burn, keep in mind what's allowable to burn with your DNR annual permit.

The DNR strongly DISCOURAGES the use of burn barrels. Burn barrels emit dioxin, acid vapors, carcinogenic tars, and "heavy metals" such as lead, cadmium and chromium, as well as unhealthy amounts of carbon monoxide.

This info supplied by the Wisconsin DNR website.

I have a neighbor who still burns trash on a regular basis, and I wish that the town of Brooklyn would enforce the law and monitor this illegal burning! If the town of Brooklyn would furnish garbage pick-up (like the city does), then people would not burn illegally.

Copy the following link into your browser, it will give you up to the minute statewide burning information. Bans, restrictions, etc. You can reach this via the DNR website also.

It's always nice to get a whiff of somebody burning toxic plastic stuff when walking about the city. I agree with the first poster on people burning things. It is ridiculous what people actually will incinerate in their 'bonfires'. Stop being so cheap and non-Green...recycle your plastics and take your trash to a dump (or pay someone to do it for you).

Hopefully the city and township will enforce these rules and regulations better than they do with storage of boats, campers, ice shanties, etc...the proof is in the actions.

Stop the burning, we don't want to be another Lake Geneva.

will you all please stop with the lake geneva bs? it is not a great town either!! why do you think we have had all those people come to our lake? haven't you noticed all those big boats that we never had here? i can hear the boats especially that cigarette type boat from my house on north lawson!!

You are right...and those big cigarette type boats spewing out all of those horrible chemicals they put into them. Have you seen the ashes and butts floating on the shoreline after they've been out there? And they use those slick marketing campaigns aimed at our youth...You know, the ones with Joe Camel riding in a cigarette boat looking all smarmy. I actually saw some "kids" (you know 'under 21' year olds) blatantly driving in a cigarette type boat the other day...in the open for everyone to see! Talk about a global problem.

Come on Green Lakers...JUST SAY NO TO CIGARETTE TYPE BOATS. After all, we don't want to be another LG...we want to be a dying GL.

Oh yeah, please observe the burning ban and help keep tourist off of our lake with their noisy boats....If it ain't quiet - it ain't right (pronounced Righ-It)!

That boat has been around for years. No one new is coming to Green Lake. Why would they, unless you own property and have your own pier (launch fee) there is nothing to do. Oh- go out to dinner?? We don't market to the bicycle riders or the hikers, and I quote "they don't spend money, boaters and golfers do". Sure. Get over yourselves Green Lake!

Amen to Green Lake people getting over themselves. Wisconsin has over 14,000 lakes.

I would not come to Green Lake for a vacation (if I did not live here). Downtown is vacant (boring), the parks are mediocre at best, and the restaurants are either overpriced or completely unimpressive. (Friends ate at the Rib a few weeks ago and said it was one of the worst meals they have ever eaten out). The lake is too big to go tubing or have fun with the kids, It seems to me that fishing is the only positive thing. I personally would rather fish on a smaller lake.

I suppose if I had LOTS of money, I could manage to enjoy a weekend in Green Lake, but it would mostly involve staying in an expensive room, eating at an expensive restaurant, and probably reading a book and relaxing. I would rather stay in the comfort of my own home.

Chief, I've been reading how the Estates of Lawsonia is finally getting close to final approval. It's taken over 2 years but it looks like the project is a go. It's good news for a weak economy. Maybe it's time for a thread about this?

Iknow this is off subject, so sorry, but I see ads for Lake Geneva, Elkhart Lake all over. In the backs of magazines, inserts in magazines, Trib, Times, MJS, Capitol Times to name a few. Full, beautiful ads!! Elkhart Lake population is 1056, a bit less than GL, ads are beautiful, the website is amazing, why I'm asking can't our chamber be on the same level? http://www.elkhartlake.com/
Thriving communities too. Can the people of this blog get together and get something done?? Seriously.

I thought that whats our bang up Chamber of Nonsense is suppose to be doing? Thanks for the web link, they did a nice job. Amazing what a little bit of creativity might do. By the way we don't want to be another Elkhart Lake.

chamber thinks that you must promote the area to get heads in beds. problem is there is nothing to do once you get here but relax in a dullsville town. golf is too expensive and fishing may not be their cup of beer. places to eat around here do not impress anyone. seems like no one wants to do their job. as a local i can not recommend any of the eateries around here. i have had bad experiences at all of them. you are better off eating at home. to beat the strangle hold of the real estate store fronts and empty high rent landlords that don't care if the stores rent, you can let all homeowners open up retail and artistry in their front rooms and the visitors can bike around and shop.

It is sad that our downtown has no "visual appeal". Yes, the lake and the dam look beautiful, but other than that there are few buildings (other than the Courthouse)that have anything interesting about them. It is simply a mish-mash of building styles, window styles, colors, signs, etc. Many small cities in Wisconsin have amazing historic factors, an entire downtown of gorgeous old brick buildings running both sides of the street (such as Princeton, Ripon, Cedarburg, etc). I don't know why Green Lake was left out of the mix way back when, but it was.

If you think this isn't important to a vital downtown, you are sorely mistaken. I don't know what can be done about it, but it is obvious that there are problems that need to be corrected.

Here's the thing. As a local year round resident, I personally don't care if I can shop downtown Green Lake, or not. Other than Crossroads Market, I am perfectly happy going to Ripon, Fond du Lac, Oshkosh, etc. if I need something. I would guess that most locals feel the same way. The only reason to have a successful downtown is to draw tourists, to ensure that the hotels, motels and restaurants succeed. Their success is essential to our home values (so they say). I am starting to wonder if any of it really has any true meaning.

It's funny that you would make these comments, as I was just thinking about this the other day. I could care less if I can shop in Green Lake. I think that everyone's priorities are screwed up. Their goals are motivated by the desire to make money. Look at who stands to gain by increased tourism. Back when these lake/resort towns were formed, the dynamics were different. Yes, the goal then was also to earn a living, but it was different than it is today. That wasn't their reason for living. It was more to enjoy the lifestyle, the lake, to live simply, to work hard, and to have enough and to be happy. Nowadays, it's all about the almighty dollar. No wonder Green Lake is failing. Your priorities are a$$ backwards.

Green Lake could be a nice, quiet residential utopia that happens to have a wonderful lake to enjoy. That is basically what we have become, and I am fine with that. If there was not one business in this town (besides the Crossroads, which I could not live without) it would not matter one bit to me. If you downtown renewal people want to succeed, then quit thinking about how to line your pockets and start thinking about what truly matters in this world. Go back to square one.

Interesting fact - if you play Evil Cabal in reverse on your phonograph it is LaBac Live! Thankfully I no longer own a turntable or I'd be scared...Very scared!

Do you mean Patti LaBac? She is awesome! The Thrasher should have her come and sing here in Green Lake. Is she somehow involved with the evil conspiracy that looms over our little city? What is going on here??? I am scared! Very scared!
