The Courthouse Saga

I can't believe the county is now going to borrow FIVE Million dollars for the courthouse project. Has anyone been watching what is going on with the economy these days? This is getting ridiculous.

This is way past being ridiculous, it is downright insane. The project should be called off until the nation's economy has stabilized. This is financial suicide for Green Lake County.

The headline on today's Wall Street Journal reads:

Stocks, Bonds Tumble to New Crisis Lows

I would think that the County Board of Supervisors and their Finance Committee would understand that our entire country is on the very threshold of a complete economic collapse. Moving forward with the new Justice Center makes no sense, no matter what anybody says.

The taxpayers of Green Lake are not being represented here, if this had gone to a vote it would never have passed. Call the project off, and work with the courthouse we have. The population of Green Lake county is not growing at a rate that justifies a new "Justice" Center!

I keep hearing about how much this building is going to cost. It is not going to get any cheaper next year. Find out how much it is costing this county to ship and house prisoners all over the state. The county had to buy a van just to haul them around and hire a partime staff to transport prisoners.

Here is the real question. How much are the taxpayers willing to spend when a jailer or a employee gets seriously injured or god forbid killed becuase the current jail is a not up to standards.

Is the county going to go bankrupt? No. Are the bill going to get paid? Yes. Will the money come from us (taxpayers)? Yes. Is the crime rate going to go down with hard financial times ahead? No.

This county's population is not rising very fast, but the the jail population has steadily gone up over the past few years. this building should have been built years ago when the tax was implimented, and if there is not going to be a new jail then suspend the tax until there are plans in hand.

I know that everyone has a right to there opinion but unless you actually pay property taxes in this county you are not a "Taxpayer" so why do you keep talking about what is best for the taxpayers.

I know that the current court house is dangerous. I had court on the second floor and was waiting outside the court and noticed that prisoners were walked right down the hall where the public sits. There is only on officer with these guys.

At any time one of these guys could get a hold of someone waiting for court or even take a hostage. It's in not like they couldn't have family members or friends waiting in the hallway to pass them a weapon or overpower the guard.

I alos had wait out in the hall with my lawyer while the person I had taken a restraining order out on was also in the hallway. This should never happen it is not safe.

The current jail is not that old. Is it even paid-off yet? It does not need to be bigger or re-modeled. What happened in it's construction design that the third floor was never used??? Can't something go into the vacant third floor? The courts and DA offices are a shame (terrible condition). I think some of the county offices which are not closely associated with the court or the jail should be relocated into a small municipal building. Move the offices of deeds, taxes, UW-EXT, and more to another local. There probably is existing buildings for offer in the area.

the jail was built in 1979 by a architect firm that had never designed a jail before. The based the design on what was requiered by the state at the time. The courthouse is an out date and totally unsafe when it comes to security. Turn the courthouse into a community center knock down the jail portion and move on.

Security is the job of the staff, not the building. I am sure the holding cells are adequate. How many escapes have their been in 28 years?

If the police/sheriff's department cannot transport a criminal safely from the jail to the courtroom, then there is something wrong with their training. The whole idea of the courthouse being "unsafe" is ludicrous. Besides, 99.9 % of our inmates are here for petty crimes. You could have little old ladies escort them to the courtroom safely.

I agree that we should work with the existing courthouse, use the third floor that now stands vacant, and move several offices off the premises if necessary. Since the entire downtown is vacant buildings, why not utilize some of them?

The need for a new justice center is a result of the process of government. As many have said, the county hasn't change, but our county government sure has. They continue on... writing new regulations, re-writing old ones, paying for studies, hiring specialist, hiring new staff to enforce and handle what they have created. And when they get it done, they start it all over again. Think of all the positions that exist today, that just 20 years ago we didn't know of or know we supposedly need. Government is a monster that feeds off its self and us poor taxpayers. And when they get this justice center done, just think... more ideas, more rooms and desks to fill, regulations to create and enforce, more fees for this and that to charge and collect... on and on it goes.
And don't even get me started on the sheriff's dept... do you feel any safer than you did 20 years ago?
