Winter Fest Canceled

As the town comes up with new ideas for tourism the cancellation of Winter Fest by the chamber seems to be the best one so far. Yet another reason not to visit this "secret gem" of a town. This is another great idea from the Chamber of Commerce(what commerce?) to encourage tourism. Once these events are cancelled it becomes more difficult to get them going again. The chamber has too many committees with too many people with their own agendas and not the towns best interests.

WTF?!?!?
I called the Chamber and they said it was not a money maker for them...so they are going to take it away as well as the tradition that goes with it- there will no longer be a Miss Winterfest from the school either. She also said the cold weather was an issue....again WTF?!?! that's why it was held in WINTER!!!!

I thought it was a nice event and offered something fun to do in the winter. A couple of years ago the weather was just perfect and there were a lot of people there.

The Chamber of Commerce must not realize that they represent the entire community of Green Lake and not just the retailers and other small businesses in town. It is pretty obvious that the retail establishments in this city are lacking, but there are other reasons (than shopping) to celebrate with a festival. Rather than thinking of some creative new ideas to revive the oh-so-sad Christmas in Green Lake and WinterFest, the new chamber director has chosen to call it quits.

I don't care too much about Winterfest but I am sure the high school kids will miss it. Hopefully they will organize a winter event of their own to replace it. Christmas, on the other hand, is not something that a town should just cancel. Someone I know said that canceling Christmas in Green Lake reminded them of "It's a Wonderful Life". Maybe the new chamber director will have a life-changing revelation and discover the true meaning of Christmas (and help and angel get his wings!), but for now, I think that many would agree with me that the Grinch has stolen Christmas in Green Lake, and we want it back.

If the chamber ran it right it would be a money maker. Pretty soon the only people making money from the chamber are the people who work at the chamber and won't have to do much work either.

Cindy Lou....are you saying that the Chamber represents retailers?....you must be joking right?!! - I can give you several examples where the Chamber have actually gone out of their way to negatively impact the sales of retailers in the downtown. So if they're not representing retailers and small businesses, and now they're not representing the interests of the community, just who are they representing?????

Where is there a retailer downtown that one can shop or buy needed items? Maybe now with that mill st jnct gone this will be a blessing and we can get some nice stores downtown who are not intimidated by that witch. Thank You very much.

Mill St Junction gone?...when/where?

Anyone can run a festival. Not just the Chamber. Maybe the fisherman could do it.

yes. Anyone can run the festival. Walkers would be ideal because of the fisheree they have.

If one of the main features of Winterfest is an ice-fishing tournament, then by all means someone should continue on with that tradition. Perhaps our community should start it's own group for organizing community events and the chamber could then focus on "commerce". Oh yeah, I forgot, there is no commerce here! Just one ugly pink store full of junk.

In response to some of the earlier posts - Seems to be a lot of complaining about the Winterfest and Christmas by the Lake events being cancelled. Maybe you all should have voted for them when the survey came out in the mail last year or the year before with your water bill! Your vote here on this website is moot now. Where is the proactive community - have any of you ever volunteered at any of these events during the middle of winter? Christmas is in the heart - no one can really take it away from you - Gimme a Break! Where's YOUR heart?

I'm just pleased for that poor camel they've been dragging out of a warm stable every year. It really gave me the hump seeing it paraded around in sub-zero temps.

Last year the Green Lake Kiwanis Club helped the Chamber with this event. The Club made about $96 dollars. Hardly any people from the City attended. How can you get people to work at these events without the prospect for profits for a club's projects? Most chamber members did not work at this event. How many of you complainers worked at the event and froze your feet? It is cold in that tent if you work for eight hours. Many hours go into an event prior to the day itself!

Events seem to happen only with the same wonderful volunteers working each event. Some of us would like a time out to enjoy an event for a change.

Step up people, you have no idea of the work involved to make an event happen!
