Elections

By now most of you know the results of the elections. In the city Joe Parise lost to Chuck Mirr in his write in campaign. Jon Wilsnack lost to Mark Slate. At the state level the Supreme Court campaign is still in flux. We'll see.

I pity the citizens of Green Lake with Chuck Mirr at the helm for another three years. Yikes, nothing will get done unless someone else steps up for him. Now the council will be "yes" to everything since only Don Carpenter will have the guts to challenge anyone. Scary isn't it!

I'm not scared.

If anyone who spends a significant amount of time on here actually put as much energy into solving the problems of our town or our school POSITIVELY rather than slinging negative rhetoric, it might help fix the problems.

How about putting your time & energy where your mouth is & pitching in to help out?

To GL Newcomber, Well said. I agree with you.

Absolutely! We are fairly new to Green Lake, too, and were shocked when an "angry, very negative long time GL resident" neighbor told us to check out the Blog to see what GL is really like. Contrary to their warnings, we fortunately have found the majority of the people in Green Lake are welcoming, active in the school in a POSITIVE way, and their great advice was to ignore the Blog as it is just a way for a very few of the "grumpy people" of GL to vent their feelings. One finds the type of people/friends they seek - and we have chosen to associate with the very caring, positive people of all ages that we have found in Green Lake.

I think there are a bunch of old retired tea party folk here who are upset that they have to pay lots of taxes on their 3/4 million dollar retirement home on the lake. In typical tea party style, it's no across the board for any kind of spending that doesn't include the military, or lining their own pockets in some way. It's an amazingly self centered bunch of people when you examine their viewpoints.

If you weed thru all the chaff, there are some intelligent people on here though. Glad you found the "normal" people in green lake. Most of us are a generally laid back, reasonable bunch.

Town Crier said...

Yes...the retired 'tea-party folks' are causing all of the rancor in Green Lake. It's always a hoot when these, "We (the Real People of Green Lake) accuse the 'filthy rich lake home owners' for anything that isn't the way it used to be in the good old days!
Yet these 'filthy rich lake home owners' are the ones who keep this community afloat with taxes, purchases, wining/dining in the local establishments, keep the 'property management' folks employed (ie: those who don't have real jobs but work for the filthy rich lake home owners'), keep the local contractors / tradesman employed...and the list goes on!
But yes...it's THEM who are the problem...not US!
Spoken like a true yokel who is jealous of what someone else has. Yes, class division exists in Green Lake...unfortunately it's the lack of class so many seem to embody that says even more about this town.
For anyone who hasn't come to the realization - - there are no real jobs around here to bring families / people to Green Lake. There is nothing to offer young people to make them want to move to Green Lake. The youth of Green Lake that have anything going for them LEAVE Green Lake since there isn't anything to keep them here. Yes, that's reality.
But yes...the only people moving to Green Lake are those 'retired tea party' types so let's ostracize them and make it financially impossible to live here by asking for more, and more, and more in taxes so that they'll also leave...along with the young people.
Let's get them all to leave so the only ones left are the generally laid-back, reasonable bunch! Will whomever leaves last please turn the lights off.

Town Crier- When is your new book of BS coming out? I enjoy reading your blog writings. The wonderful lake people that haul all their goodies up from Illinoise, stay on the lake, never come into town, hire the mexicans from illinoise to do their work, and complain about how we run our area. Go help hand out soup and bread to the "deadbeats that don't have real jobs"! I am so sick of these rich lake people and rich retirees that won't spend money to help us in this area try to make something of ourselves. Instead we should be happy for the food pantry and a big new jail we can stay at if we need be.

Adolph Oliver Bush must live in a different Green Lake than I do. He is obviously one of the many "I hate the rich" locals who didn't make much of his own life.

Most of the Illinois people that I know are not "tea partiers" but in fact Chicago Democrats. They utilize local services and support local businesses. Adolph, do you think they are driving to Illinois to buy gas and groceries? To dine out? And yes, I have noticed truckloads of fib Mexicans driving around Green Lake with shovels and rakes! LOL!

Aren't the Havey's from Illinois? They have done truly wonderful things for Green Lake.

That is why Lakeway went out of business. Pettack couldn't compete with all the Mexicans.

I am going to boycott Corona Beer until these FIBS quit hiring all these mexicans to do their yard work! Just say "no" (same in english or espanol) to hombres with rakes!

From what I understand...Lakeway's demise had more to do with the 'Corona's' than with the Mexicans!

Won't the School Board (Ken Bates) ever hear that we are tired of them spending money on legal fees that should be used for our childrens' education? We see that the school board (Ken Bates) is still consulting lawyers to try to get 3 School Board members, ironically who all 3 put our children's education first - and not Bates' personal goals, off the Board due to also serving on the Town Board. Several lawyers have been on the case and at least 2 ruled that there is no law saying that Town Board Members cannot also serve on the School Board. Sounds like he'll do anything, including using our tax dollars, to get his mouth-piece, Wendy, back on the School Board? PLEASE accept 2 lawyers' rulings and start focusing on what he was hired for, our childrens' education.

Anonymous said...

Haven't heard about any more legal consulting...please share your insight with the rest of us.
If this is happening with Bates then the question of boar approval comes in to play. Who authorized the spending?

Anonymous said...

Sorry...not 'boar' approval but Board Approval. Although not a 'bat (purposely mis-spelled for effect) idea' to get the nod from the boar also!!!

Anonymous said...

We saw it too - check out the headline on the front page of today's GL Reporter. They (Bates, et al) have gotten the City and County Councils involved by continuing to question the legality of it DESPITE 3 lawyers already ruling that it was not conflict of interest.

COMPLETELY FED UP said...

The school board did not vote to approve hiring a lawyer to begin with. To reiterate: THIS WAS NOT A BOARD DECISION.

Ken Bates, Wendy Schultz and Gordy Farrell should get out their check-books and write out their share of the attorney fees.

Listen up, all who were behind this witch-hunt. THE TAXPAYERS ARE NOT PAYING FOR YOUR ATTORNEY. Got that? This will NOT get swept under the rug.

Taxpayer 1010228 said...

Just a question - since when can lawyers "rule" on anything? Legal opinions on the actual situation are interesting, just like budget numbers, they can be manipulated to reflect the hiring party's beliefs.

So...Ken Bates is really the ONLY person in Green Lake who sees a conflict for someone sitting on the School Board as well as county board or city council? Count me in with Ken - I want to know how someone can serve both groups - do those board members have to recuse themselves for half of the business on the agenda & which meeting do they choose to represent?

This seems like a serious consolidation of power to me & not healthy, I thought all you tea partiers were about smaller government & giving power back to the people...I guess you mean just a few then right?

Anonymous said...

Gee, I thought this was a free country, where people are elected to serve freely by the public. Seems some folks believe that there is a conflict of interest here. I don't. Maybe this Brooklyn Witch Hunt is part of that New World Order that Ken Bates is trying to indocrintate our students with. Hey Ken, remember, this is the United States of America, NOT the United Nations.

Anonymous said...

Someone please explain to me exactly what is the conflict of interest for someone serving on the county board (or city council) and also the school board?

If this is a conflict of interest, then lets examine all of the local boards. Why is Tom Eddy the president of the Caestecker Public Library Board? School Administrator Ken Bates also serves on that board. So does school media director Lauren Norton. This seems like a VERY unbalance library board to me. And yet there is nothing legally wrong with it.

Ken Bates also sits on the Green Team, the Rotary, the GLA, etc. etc. and these activities are a conflict of interest for Ken, simply because he is not at school when he is supposed to be. We are paying him to be AT THE SCHOOL AND DOING HIS JOB. So please lets address this conflict of interest.

Wendy Schultz was Gordy Farrell's nurse after his mishap, and the two of them have their special little relationship, yet they served together on the school board for years. Talk about being in cahoots. If you you really want to nit-pick, let's go for it. I'm just getting started here.

To the person who calls everyone he disagrees with a 'Tea Partier'. You really have no grasp of reality do you. You must be a 'Local'... loud and proud of... let's see... nothing!

Interesting responses! I am the writer who questioned Bates, Wendy, and Gordy on continuing the "lawsuit" of people serving on the Town Board and the School Board - and was viciously accused of being a "!@#$ Tea Partier". FYI, we voted for Obama, and since then have been very disappointed & surprised at the angry remarks and loss of friendships we have experienced from our Green Lake "friends" of over 15 years who are now Tea Partiers. We wonder how such supposedly "Patriotic Americans" can overlook the freedoms written in the Bill of Rights that all Americans are created equal and have the right to choose leaders as they wish. Obviously this is no longer true in Green Lake as evident by the hatred expressed on this Blog and friendships we have lost by those who we thought were our Green Lake "friends" who are proud Tea Partiers. Obviously in Green Lake,non-Tea Partiers do not have the freedom to vote as we choose, or right to live, work, and worship together with tolerance and respect?

Citizens are right to be suspicious of the so-called “incompatibility” campaign, regarding the Brooklyn supervisors who sit on the Green Lake School Board.

The timing of the issue spoke for itself. Certain school officials wanted to unleash the “problem” at just the right time. Don’t be fooled. It’s not coincidence that this happened right before the election. Despite the nonsense, Ron Triemstra was soundly elected to the School Board and Town Board last week. If that doesn’t indicate a significant backfire, nothing would.

It’s true: The full School Board was NOT involved in seeking a legal opinion. Certain school officials simply went and got it themselves, and then billed the school. We should wonder why the issue was initiated behind the scenes, rather than coming before the full School Board, openly and honestly. Some board members didn’t even know this was happening until it was too late.

It’s also interesting that the school attorney just happened to have the same opinion as the school officials who were pushing the issue. It wasn’t dropped until attorney Steve Sorenson showed up at a School Board meeting and took the topic to the woodshed, leaving the instigators with egg on their faces.

Basically, this “incompatibility” situation reeks of shenanigans. The people who pulled this stunt should be reprimanded. Citizens deserve OPEN government, a concept that the Green Lake School Board never entirely grasps, despite election after election where incumbents are voted out.

One last point, regarding the law firm that handled this for the school: These are the same bozos who charged us more than $23,000 to coerce a “free” piece of land from Lindenwood and the ABA. What an absolute farce.

How many times has the school used that land? (Hint: Activities at the Tea House don’t count, because the building wasn’t part of the deal).

Excellent postings here. Isn't it great that we can discuss these issues with civility.

The matter of hiring legal counsel without board approval must be dealt with according the school board rules and protocol. If this protocol was not followed, then the tax payer should not be slapped with the burden of paying these legal fees. Those board members who acted on their own, in conjunction with Ken Bates, can pay for those legal fees out of their own pockets. The tax payers are fed up with the rogue school board activity. Now that Wendy is (soon to be) gone, perhaps they can ALL start following the rules. No more tail wagging the dog.

I'm confused - - from what I've been told, read, 'investigated' (yes, I've actually looked into something before posting on it - somewhat novel from what I've read here)...
The only potential issue with regard to having 3 Town of Brooklyn supervisors on the GL School Board was if they would form a quorum!! Never was an issue prior to the most recent election AND only seemed to become an issue when it appeared that a long-term (way overly-long term) board member was in danger of losing her seat.

Once the primaries were held and the results showed a strong potential for this to happen...Well then - - in the words of the immortal Keith Jackson..."Whoa Nellie, Katie bar the door!!" Suddenly MAJOR ISSUE according to some on the board and our illustrious Ken Bates (stick finger down throat...it will make you feel better).
Why wasn't it an issue having all of these Town of Brooklyn folks on the board straight along? It had nothing to do with the "Roberts Rules of Order Quorum" situation. It was just that KB's mouthpiece was about to be voted off of her throne and 3 fiscally minded folks were going to try to help keep this school open.
In fact...since most of the money in Green Lake is located in the Town of Brooklyn, and they are some of the highest taxpayers due to this 'expensive' lake property...wouldn't it be in the best interests of these Town of Brooklyn town board / school board members to DO THEIR DARNDEST to KEEP the school open since it keeps the mill rates down??? Makes sense to me.

And let's consider something else...Wasn't/Isn't Gordy Farrell on the Town of Brookly Planning Commission? And, with the exception of Dennis Deyo, don't ALL of the rest BOE members presently LIVE in the Town of Brooklyn (for those who don't know the answer is YES).

So...let's put this dead-horse to rest and move on. Stop paying unauthorized funds to lawyers for 'legal interpretations' and start thinking about the future of the school...let's hope there is one!

To Adolph Oliver Douche....
Yes, we need to strengthen our southern (Wisconsin) border to stop the infiltration of those like the Havey's from ruining the 'pure Aryan, in-bred blood-lines' that obviously run rampant in Green Lake!
Those horrible Havey's who have spun their web of control with:
Charitable events to benefit the Fire Department; Police Department and First Responders!
Generous donations of trucks; lighting; equipment to the Fire Dept/ Police Dept/ First Responders.
Have helped keep our property taxes down through these donations which affect our safety/fire rating as a municipality (insurance costs - look into it if you don't understand).
Have invested heavily in the Green Lake community both financially and personally to keep our area dynamic and not dying like so many other small towns JUST LIKE Green Lake!
Adolph - you are a fool (and a douchebag?)
