The Old Judd Property

The Judd property on Illinois Ave was sold a couple of years ago. It had been cleaned up and looked great. It was one of the Grand Old Ladies of the Lake. President Taft stayed there. Gorgeous property. Well, I hope you know where I am talking about because it is gone now. About 3 days ago a bulldozer had its way with it. All gone. Painful to look at. They are splitting it into two properties. The property is 260 feet. It is because of things like this that future development needs to be looked at now. This is so typical of people to come in the middle of the winter when no one is around and do this.

Such a loss for Green Lake history and special treasures inside: each of the tiles around the fireplace is $10,000 and the wood is very special, too. It's obvious that some one not knowledgeable about Green Lake and only wants the 200 feet plus land. Alas! It's been a special home for a special family who enjoyed the site for many years.

This is so typical of Green Lake.
Stealth and secrecy.

Brace yourselves for more and more of this...
Where was the outrage about this very thing a few years ago when we tried to get some momentum on halting "developers"...???
Reaping what we sow or don't sow...
And the Mayor says "Come on in..."

Very sad. Now all we have are the pictures. Treasures like the Derring Lodge should be protected. The house was a craftsman masterpiece. I saw the pile of rubble this weekend. Properties like the Derring Lodge are what make a place like Green Lake unique. Now in its place we be new homes on 100 ft lots, very rare these days.

speaking of stealth and secrecy- has anyone heard that the town of Brooklyn is reassessing the tax base for people on the Lake? Sounds like they will do a walk thru of the houses, too! can you hear the moans and shrieks from the south??

The town of brooklyn reassess is happening partially because the current records are 80 years old and the paper is literally falling apart.

PROGRESS MUST PREVAIL NO MATTER WHAT THE COST TO THE COMMUNITY!! THE ARTS AND CRAFT MASTERPIECE IS GONE FOREVER AND THE WOODWORK AND THE FIGURAL GRUEBY TILES ABOVE THE FIREPLACE SHOULD HAVE BEEN RECLAIMED!!! I JUST LOVE ALL THE PROGRESS IN GREEN LAKE AND OUR QUAINTNESS THAT BROUGHT VISITORS TO THE AREA ARE DISAPPEARING WITH STEALTH AND SECRECY. JLL

This town needs an enema.
It's none of your business if someone wants to buy a piece of property and demolish an old house on it.
Why don't you bitch at the real estate agent who sold the property to the jerks too. Pretty sure it was no secret to him/her that it was going down. Times change. Houses get knocked down. If you cared about the house so much, you should have bought it yourself.
Stealth and secrecy - ha! You're giving too much credit.
Get a life. Stay out of other peoples business - because that's what it is - business. And if you didn't buy it, it's not yours.

This town needs and enema? Welcome to the conversation Mr. Happy. Business or not people are sentimental for the place.

We have the right to be sentimental about beautiful homes that have been apart of our city's history. I guess if we have the right to be sentimental than you have the right to be an a!#.

Gotta agree with Backoff on this one.....
this is business and the town is being run by buisiness people who put themselvers first over evrything
you only gotta look at the city and the chamber to see that - hotle/motel owners , realtors property developers...and we elected them!!! now we're moaing cos they're pulling the p[lace down an developing it...

wake up smell the roses....adopt a realtor, it's the best money youll ever spend

"everyone has way to much time to care about everybody else. worry about yourself"

Is this some Eastern proverb?

I totaly understand the sentimental and historic value of these homes, but what if you owned it..would you really want someone to tell you...sorry, you cannot sell this house EVER, we are already told how high we can build that fence, number of out buildings we can have, we need all kinds of permits to improve our homes. Now we should be told, sorry you cannot sell or build new because of the sentimental or historic value...sorry I cannot agree with that.

Anon- I think you missed the point. No one is saying they can't do what they want with their property. It is the way in which it was done. There were many little items they could have salvaged for the historical society for example. They just buldozed without regard for that sort of thing. It is just sad people have that attitude and what creates animosity.
