I think the city of Green Lake is lucky to have the police they do. They do their job with common sense and serve the town very well. That seems to be a rare thing these days. Mostly the police just seem to out to "raise" money for the town budget without regard to individuals. I recently heard the local Princeton police get $4 dollars/hour more than the City of Green Lake police. I realize there budget constraints but when and if there is any money around I think these guys deserve a raise.
Sunday morning Winn Collins was on Wisconsin Public TV talking about the need for funding from the state for more DA assistance. He did a nice job. Good work Winn.

Chief: I totally agree with you, keep up the good work guys and thank you.
I also agree, and frankly you can not pay them enough money to take the verbal abuse, and sometimes physical abuse along with all of the other things they deal with, as we have experienced in the past, BAD things can and do happen, even in Green Lake---believe it or not they do more than just ride around the city in the police car. We should be thankful that we have the staff that we do. Keep in mind if you treat them with respect you will get it in return.
THANKS TO ALL
We definitely have a low crime rate here in Green Lake. I like the fact that the squad does daily patrol, they make a positive presence here.
I am also very glad that our GL boys in blue haven't made our town into a speed trap like Ripon and Rosendale have. I realize that police departments raise money by giving out speeding tickets, but it sure doesn't make for a very friendly atmosphere. Imagine how bad the tourism here would be if we treated folks like that! For the most part, we have a very peaceful place to live.
Speeding citations do not bring any noticeable revenue into the City Budget because The City only gets $5.00 or a little more for each citation written. We do not have a municipal court so the majority of the money from the citations goes to the State. Money from parking citations does go to our city.
I believe that this area should be more aggressive on speeders. I also believe the GL police have long spells of downtime with nothing to do. Cracking down on speeders is something the police can do to justify their payroll regardless of how much money it generates. I respect Ripon and Rosendale for their awsome reputation against speeders. It shows pride for their community. You should try walking around Green Lake in the roads (Because we do not have enough sidewalks) when these speeders tear up behind you. I would love to let them know how I feel with a 500 dollar ticket. I feel this way because I have never received a speeding ticket and never will because I don't speed. You all should try it but like money see monkey do you all will continue to speed.
You can get a ticket driving through Rosendale even if you have done nothing wrong! That is what speed traps do, ticket folks just to get money, even when they do not deserve it!!!!!
I agree. the one speeding ticket I ever received, I was going exactly the speed limit and was pulled over and ticketed. I went to court and the judge sided with the cop. I could have pleaded faulty equipment, but I knew there was nothing wrong with my car or me. I had to pay the ticket anyway and my insurance went up as a result. This was in a small town with a speed trap.
Rosendale is ridiculous. For one thing, the speed decreases to 45 and then right away to 30 just as you crest the hill and are literally still in the country. While I have never received a speeding ticket there, nearly every time we drive through Rosendale, somebody is pulled over. The question is if this a reasonable speed decrease at a reasonable place in the highway. That is what I would call a speed trap. Ripon isn't any better, especially unfair on the east side of town on 44 where the speed limit is 25 until you reach the country.
I don't see a speeding problem in Green Lake. That doesn't mean that people don't speed here. For the most part, people drive okay.
First there is a speeding problem on south lawson from mcconnell inn to route 23. I know because I walk everyday. Also I drive to fond du lac on 23 and to oshkosh on 44 and i have no sorrow for the other drivers that pass me like i am standing still. I always set my cruise to 58 mph for the benefit of doubt.I also have no problem with the changing of speeds at different locations. I also don't believe the stories of tickets for not speeding. I have attended the sessions for ticket court and most offenders never show up for court and the ones that do if they plead not guilty their tickets are always lowered to the minimum rate if your driving record is good. There was a man there that received a ticket for driving too slow. I thought that was crazy, but when you learn the man was constantly pulled over and given warnings about his driving you can understand the ticket.
What the F_ Rodger, you just said in an early post you have never received a speeding ticket. Now you're quoting stories from traffic court. Get your story straight pal. By the way, we're you the dumb b_stard I blew off the road on 44 on the way to Oshkosh?
I never have received a speeding ticket. I was there with a friend. I will continue to flip off all speeders who pass me on 23 or 44. Makes me feel like I've done something for the community. Someone has to if the cops are not around to pull you over smartass. Does it make you feel good to speed like it's some God given right. Remember you are setting examples for your children if you can reproduce. You are teaching them it's alright to speed. They will now have a much greater chance of dying.
I will tell you Rodger for a fact that I was issued a speeding ticket when I was not speeding. In fact, when I was at a stoplight, a squad pulled up behind me. Knowing there was a cop right behind me, I stayed right on the speed limit as I traveled perhaps a mile. Then his lights went on and he pulled me over. He didn't even have his radar on, and admitted this in court. Rather, since he went to a class for police officers and learned the technique of "pacing", he determined that I was speeding. Since the cop was "trained" in pacing, the judge took his side. I was not speeding, not even a little. This was about 10 years ago. The city where this happened is notorious for being a speed trap.
Someone recently told me that if you are stopped for speeding, you have the right to see the readout on the radar-gun in the squad car to verify the number. Perhaps someone out there can let me know if this is true.
Rodger, I walk in town all the time, and have never felt endangered by drivers. Of course, I stay off to the side where I belong. Don't get me wrong, I am not saying I have never seen a speeder in Green Lake. I have seen a few classic examples, but for the most part they are the exception and not the rule. I agree with you on highways 23 and 44, I stay at or below 58 mph and people ride my tail until they have a chance to pass. I would rather that they pass me than follow too closely.
