They're BACK!!!

There will be another school referendum on the September 14th ballot. I haven't seen the wording for it yet but it has to be similar to the last 2. Good Luck!

The new documentary "Waiting for Superman" is taking America by storm. It has opened in theaters in 4 states and has already set records for a documentary. The movie studies the failing American educational system. Oh, yes, it is failing. We spend more money per student than any other nation in the world,

"Waiting for Superman" argues that the greatest enemies of American primary and secondary education are the teachers' unions.

Our schools were better decades ago, before we threw millions of dollars at our problems, only to make things worse. Money is not the answer. Teachers unions began in the 1960's, and it is no coincidence that is when schools began to fail. School reform is on the way. Green Lake is a classic example of why it is so desperately needed.

Good post. But must include the administration, too, - who are not in the Unions, but demand and get salaries beyond their worth. Besides "administrator plus principal" but for the past several years many of us parents have expressed the need for a counselor for the elementary students as well as h.s.students who do not intend to go to college, but need help and encouragement to explore tech schools. To look good, GL students are steered to college, but dropped out the first year as a 4-year college was "not for them". Also since our excellent counselor for grade school children was "dismissed", many of our younger students who have concerns - both at school and home - do not have anyone to talk to about their concerns. In the past couple years, several students who have been bullied and/or needed someone at school to talk to - AND LISTEN to them, have transferred to other schools since their needs were not attended to or not taken seriously by the staff at GL.

I agree completely. Now some high schools are offering a tech-school curriculum, and students can actually graduate high school with an associates degree. This is the future of public education. College is not for everyone, tech school is essential for the trades and other occupations. Also, "higher" education (it seems) has become a "for profit" venture that is sucking the future away from our youth. Did you graduate college with $100,000 in debt? It shouldn't be like this. Knowledge is in fact FREE, let's figure out a way to make it affordable, too.

It sure is nice that we're arguing about our $4.50 mill rate, financed almost exclusively by local dollars. In another area district, the cuts in state aid have caused a 12% tax hike just to keep the budget level.

We should be really careful about screwing up a really good thing. Every other district in the area would love to have our situation and can't understand our arguing about pennies!

Support our school & be damn glad that it's the 6th least expensive k-12 district in the state. WE"RE ON OUR WAY TO KILLING THE GOOSE & PAYING LOTS MORE IN ORDER TO GET LESS !!!!!

From WRPNAM.com:

Waupun Area School District taxpayers will more than likely be shouldering more of the financial load in the 2010-11 budget year and the district’s business services director says that’s largely due to reductions in state aid. A proposed tax levy of 10.4 million dollars for the 2010-11 budget was approved at the district’s annual meeting. The preliminary tax rate is estimated at $10.31 per thousand dollars of assessed value, up from $9.20. Business Services Director John Stellmacher says that’s a 14 percent increase in the tax levy and a 12 percent jump in the tax rate…and the district’s budget will also be slightly increasing. Stellmacher says the district isn’t spending more money; rather the state has shifted more of the financial burden to the local level. The Waupun school board will look to approve the final budget at a meeting on October 25th.
