County Board Meeting on Court House Options

Last night the county board had a meeting to hear options on the old Courthouse. It wasn't really options but what the county should do with it while it houses the 40 people that it left behind while the rest of them move out to the new building. I need to look at the pamphlet they handed out. It gave money figures for the options they were looking at but I did not have copy. They did hear from the Cornerstone Project people on what they would like to do with it.

I am very leery of the Cornerstone Project. I don't really see a need for it. We live in a county with a population of 19,000. The average age is 41.5 and getting older. We are building a bike path, we have a lake. We have winter sports. Most of these things are not being utilized to their full potential now. They say they don't want or expect tax dollars but I'm doubtful of that in the future if they get the funds to get off the ground. We don't have a population to support this sort of project.

What an absolute farce. County Board member Dennis Galatowitsch asked the Board to move out to County "A" three years ago, but nobody would listen. Now, it’s exactly what the county is doing, but likely for more money than if it was done earlier. Was it really necessary to waste a decade on this issue? The County Board’s inefficiency is breathtaking.

The Cornerstone Project is the biggest joke to ever hit Green Lake County!!! In the last year I have yet to have anyone say "it's a good idea" who are the dreamers behind this idea anyway??? WAKE up it's never going to fly!!! We already have one big mistake here with the new Courthouse-- don't let people laugh at us about another--

Please, someone explain what the Cornerstoner Project is?

The cornerstone (or foundation stone) concept is derived from the first stone set in the construction of a masonry foundation, important since all other stones will be set in reference to this stone, thus determining the position of the entire structure.
Over time a cornerstone became a ceremonial masonry stone, or replica, set in a prominent location on the outside of a building, with an inscription on the stone indicating the construction dates of the building and the names of architect, builder and other significant individuals. The rite of laying a cornerstone is an important cultural component of western architecture and metaphorically in sacred architecture generally.
Some cornerstones include time capsules from the time a particular building was built. The origins of this tradition are vague but its presence in Judeo-Christian countries can be associated with one quotation from the Old Testament
Often, the ceremony involved the placing of offerings of grain, wine and oil on or under the stone. These were symbolic of the produce and the people of the land and the means of their subsistence. This in turn derived from the practice in still more ancient times of making an animal or human[2][3][4] sacrifice that was laid in the foundations.
The Roumanians of Transylvania think that he whose shadow is thus immured will die within forty days; so persons passing by a building which is in course of erection may hear a warning cry, Beware lest they take thy shadow! Not long ago there were still shadow-traders whose business it was to provide architects with the shadows necessary for securing their walls. In these cases the measure of the shadow is looked on as equivalent to the shadow itself, and to bury it is to bury the life or soul of the man, who, deprived of it, must die. Thus the custom is a substitute for the old practice of immuring a living person in the walls, or crushing him under the foundation-stone of a new building, in order to give strength and durability to the structure, or more definitely in order that the angry ghost may haunt the place and guard it against the intrusion of enemies.
Often still, and certainly until the 1970s, most ceremonies involved the use of a specially manufactured and engraved trowel that had a formal use in laying mortar under the stone. Similarly, a special hammer was often used to ceremonially tap the stone into place.
Freemasons sometimes perform the public cornerstone laying ceremony for notable buildings.
The cornerstone is a solid stone cube upon which a cross has been carved. Below the cross, the following words are inscribed:

In the top of the stone a cross-shaped space is hollowed out into which relics may be placed. Relics are not required, but they are normally placed in the cornerstone. If no relics are inserted in the stone, the inscription may be omitted, but not the cross.

I don't know who the smart-ass cut and paste historian is, but this is obviously not the correct answer to the question.

From what I understand, the Cornerstone project is a delusional dream to have an upscale type of health club where people will come from all over the county to work out, swim and in conjunction with area clinics and health professionals fork over money for membership fees for this illustrious privilege.

Never mind that it would cost millions to build, thousands to heat, and that the free work out facility at the school is underutilized. The theory is that people will pay hundreds of dollars annually to go work out when in fact most people in Green Lake do not work out even when they can do it for free up at the (very nice) gym at the school.

I am the smart-ass & Arnold is a dumb-ass. Work out centers are the new Starbucks. They truly are money makers and the reason for the cornerstone project is provide a place where people from our area can all be provided with UP TO DATE MACHINES & PROCEDURES for healthy exercise and socializing. The school gym & workout room is a joke. There is only a few machines that are available and many of them are broken or out of order. No one is ever there because they already know what a crap hole it is or they know it is not even open or available for the public. It has crazy hours that don't make sense or they decide to close early for some reason. The only pool we can use is at the Heidel House (this is a secret) and there is no set rule on hours because everything changes if they have guests. Seniors don't feel comfortable at the school because of the younger pimple poppers walking around struttin their prison manners as they lift weights. That is the trouble around here everyone is so self centered and they don't consider the others and when some group comes along to make things happen you attack.

In a perfect world, every town would have a multi-million dollar health club, complete with swimming pool, aerobics classes and a day-care center. But we don't live in a perfect world, far from it.

Green Lake county does not have the population or the per capita income to build and sustain such a dream. The summer people are busy in their boats and entertaining in their lake homes. The elderly folks (who are healthy enough) already use the gym at the school, which is an excellent free facility. They sure are not going to pay $300 per year on a fixed income to go work out.

It is apparent that Cornerstone's hope is that some fat cats with too much money will donate millions to build this white elephant. But then it would be up to the community to maintain the place, and that is not within anyone's budget. Period.

This reminds me of the democrats plan to spend $810 million in federal stimulus money to extend the high-speed rail from Milwaukee to Madison when there clearly is no need for such a rail system. Would it be nice to have? Sure. But guess who gets to pay to run, subsidize and maintain this wonderful "gift"? The taxpayers of Wisconsin! Polls have already shown that the commuting needs of Wisconsin cannot support such a venture, but that (of course) does not stop democrats from spending money that they do not even have! The bottom line is that it is going to cost everyone a lot of money. This Cornerstone project cannot and will not sustain itself.

Anonymous said...

You are absolutely correct that this project can not be supported by the community. That's not to say that the community won't 'support' it, which they will because everyone wants something that they don't have to put out to get. Now that is the tricky part...once the $$$ start being requested it will be a different story.
Whomever called this a 'delusional dream' was dead on!

Is the six miles to “Anytime fitness” just too damn far to drive? Can you not go for a run or walk, lift weights in your basement, do sit ups or push ups, watch what you eat, drink & smoke less? If you can’t discipline yourself to do that, you won’t go to Cornerstone either.

Unfortunately Chief; the County is going to leave us with an albatross of a building right in the heart of town. What to do with it is going to be a problem for years. My vote, go ahead and tear it down, I don’t give a rip about any historic significance. It’s a poorly designed building for anything except what it was designed for and we have $25,000,000 in reasons that is obviously is not good enough anymore for that. It will be nothing but a problem and expense for years to come. Take that square block of town and put something there that will be a benefit to all the community. Be it a hotel, businesses or something. If you think the old county building is usable, step up and get your check book out, then when you go broke in you endeavors you can abandon it and we’ll all have to deal with it again.

How about a casino in the county building? Something for seniors to do. They won't have to take the buses that come to the city and take them out of town for the day. It would also provide jobs!

Snake Eyes said...

And why they're at it they could serve food and drinks at discounted prices off set by gambling income. That ought to help shut down all the other restaurants and bars in town. Gee, what a wonderful idea, as if this down wasn't desolate enough? (sarcasm intended)

I'd like to see some type of trade school come in to the old Courthouse, or even a Jr. college

Where is the closest UW affiliated extension?

Old Fat Man said...

First good idea to come along in a long time. But then again, we may have an empty public school in a few years that a trade school or UW extension could come to??

Just to stay on track, I don't think that Cornerstone thing is work a hill of beans. School has a nice work out room, often see folks in there.

What about some kind of cool museum? Something that might attract visitors to the area and bring more attention to Green Lake? Not sure what kind, but something that could lend itself to an old classic building like the courthouse?

Anonymous said...

I like that we are getting some creative ideas on the blog. A museum is a nice idea, but I don't know how realistic it would be. These types of institutions are expensive to establish and maintain. Who would fund it? Who would pay to heat the building? Salaries? It is good to bring up ideas and look at these possibilities from all angles.

Chief
Lets talk about the incident at the school. We expell a kid if they get caught with any amount of drugs or a butter knife, but when a kid creates a computer game about another girl and she has to transfer schools, they get a 2 day suspension? Does this make any sense?

Anonymous said...

I have heard that there is a course at the school that teaches the students how to make computer games. Is this true? While this could be a career to be pursued after high school in a technical college, I hardly understand why this type of course would be offered in high school. Are the students in this gamer class proficient in accelerated math classes? Foreign languages? Advanced science courses? Why doesn't the school get back to the basics of teaching students what they need to know to get into college and tech school, and quit trying to be a fun factory for every whim that every student might conceive of. No wonder we pay more per student than any other public school in the state of Wisconsin!

The Old Fat Man said...

How'd we go from "Court House Options" topic, to some kid getting expelled for some game and some girl transferred schools??

Why don't you people who oppose the school start your own blog so you can all bitch in one big angry group. The Chief started this blog so we could discuss issues important and fun for GL. Yes, the school's important, but why the hell does everything have to work it's way into bitching about the school? Geez, give it a rest!!

Now, back to topic. I've been to lots of Wisconsin towns that have had museums in their old govt buildings. There just great and a lot of fun to go through. I'm sure there's enough room that a museum and some rooms for UW extension plus other activities could share the space. I know there are other community groups looking for a place to meet. The libraries great but their back room is small. That county board room cleared out would make a great community room. Maybe we could find some business's to rent some of the upstairs offices? What happened to that downtown revitalization group that was forming? Maybe they have some thoughts??

Anonymous said...

And just who is supposed to own this building where old fat men can look at museum quality trinkets and where public meetings would be held? Who would pay thousands per month to heat this huge building in the winter? Property taxes? Please let me know how this would all happen.

Anonymous said...

Sorry old fat man, I thought the chief should mention as this was in the paper. I hope I didn't cause you too much stress by posting my thoughts. It isn't bitching about the school, it is bringing up a point re: bullying that goes on. relax

Who pays for it is a good question. I'm just throwing out ideas. If it's not a break even proposition, including upkeep at least, then I agree with "Facts are Facts" poster above, go ahead and tear the damn thing down. Would you agree or should we keep it for it's "historic value", whatever that is, regardless of cost? What else around here had been kept for "historic value"? Not much that I can see.

Anonymous said...

I like the old courthouse, but as old courthouses go, it's not that special. I'd like to see it stay, but not irregardless of the cost.

Anonymous said...

I know... how about a Baptist retreat center? It's already annexed to Green Lake so that wouldn't be a problem. Then we could find some guy to run it who would hire his family and friends and put it way into serious debt. After a while, they could divide up all the rooms and try to sell each of them one by one during a depressed economy. Whoops, never mind, this idea's already been stolen.

Here's a SHOT in the dark--- move the school into the court house--3rd floor in the safety bldg. could be a gym-- and then make the school into apts. for the elderly it's all one level-- nice big rooms gym could be rented out for big parties or weddings--etc. Just a thought :-)

Anonymous said...

Does anyone know how much the average cost is to heat the courthouse during the winter months?

Turn down the heat! said...

IDK, but when I've been in there during the winter, it's the warmest building in town! Don't know about the safety building.

Nancy Pelosi’s “In-flight services” tab for food and liquor, is $101,000 so far for the taxpayers on her weekly jaunts to the left coast.

” It reads like a dream order for some wild frat party: Maker’s Mark whiskey, Couvoisier cognac, Johnny Walker Red scotch, Grey Goose vodka, E & J brandy, Bailey’s Irish Creme, Bacardi Light rum, Jim Beam whiskey, Beefeater gin, Dewars scotch, Bombay sapphire gin, Jack Daniel’s whiskey and Corona beer.” – WorldNetDaily.com by Bob Unruh

Yeah, and she's the one screaming about taking care of the little person and making sure everyone gets an equal shot. If what you say is true about her airplane food and gas bill, it is a horrendous misuse of government funds. I'm guessing she is not the only one enjoying these privileged amenities, and somehow justifying doing so, but try selling that to the person that cannot pay for their medical bills or make their mortgage.
