Governing Bodies of the Lake
Many of the problems I see in the area stem from ancient governing powers set up in Washington 150 years ago. The city is one governing body(City of Green Lake) while the larger area is Town of Brooklyn. Many of the citizens mutual interests come into conflict because by necessity these bodies must protect their tax basis. I would love to see these two entities come under one governing body. People naturally try to protect what power they have to the detriment of their mutual needs. Maybe the city should just start annexing as much as possible of the township bringing it under "one roof". It would make life less complicated for all us to go forward with mutual needs. The lake is the lively hood for many of us and this would be to all of our interests. We need one governing body for the benefit of all citizens here.

I am not familiar with this type of legal situation, so please pardon my ignorance. I can see how a joining of the two entities might be beneficial. Is there any way to merge the city and the town without annexing? EX: town + city = twitty?
How would you go about doing this and how would it affect taxes?

It appears that today at 4:30 there will be a joint GLC common council and TOB board meeting at City Hall. Issues include summer rec and river debris clearing. See the agenda on the city website. Where did this come from?
What is wrong with the idea of simplifying government? Think about how many jurisdictions we live under...national government, state government, county government, city or town government. Considering that America was established so that we could all be free and happy, that sure is a lot of government! And each entity wants a portion of our money! (At least, those of us who actually work and contribute to society). Less government! Fewer taxes!
What a ridiculous idea. That will never happen. Why are we wasting time discussing it?
We should just talk about how Amtrak wants to build a rail bridge across Big Green, or how the Hilton is planning a 50-story hotel in downtown Green Lake.
This idea is not as ridiculous as you might think. These mergers of town and city are happening across our country. Just recently in Wisconsin a referendum to merge the town and city of Verona, near Madison, was voted down:
Town of Verona: Rural voters shot down a proposed merger with the City of Verona Tuesday.
The Town of Verona is not so slowly being swallowed by Madison and the City of Verona.
"Since September of 2006 we've lost nearly 3,000 acres of land," says Town Chairman Dave Combs.
Pretty soon Madison's housing developments will back right up to Verona's. Under state law, towns can't prevent neighboring cities from annexing property for development. That's why the Town Board agreed to merge with the City of Verona. The consolidation needed to be approved in local referendums. 90% of the city residents said yes, but the town residents said no by a two to one margin.
"I think people voted their pocketbooks," says Combs. He says town residents would see their property tax rates increase $1.25 per thousand dollars of value. "Typical house in the Town of Verona that would be a $300-350 increase in taxes. I think good times, bad times that's a tough pill to swallow."
"As more land is annexed our mill rate would be going up anyway," says Laura Dreger, a Town Supervisor who opposed consolidation. "I was very concerned that things were being rushed."
Dreger can see the threat of expansion out her window. There's a Madison development across the street from her family farm. She wants to see more refined boundary agreements. "I hope that the town stays the town and as a town we can do boundary agreements with Madison, Verona and Fitchburg."
For now, Dreger says a possible recession will slow development while they negotiate a better consolidation deal. "The farm economy is really very good. When that happens farmers have no incentives to sell their land."
The Mayor of City of Verona says this was a lost opportunity to control the pace of development, but he says the big loser is the Town of Verona because the City will continue to annex whatever property they want.
"A town or township in Wisconsin shall only exist or continue to be until a city is ready to grow." It is going to happen!
to "you must be joking"...this is a real issue. Where you live in the county effects everything you deal locally not the least of which is taxes. It is how to govern the library, the new bike path, building permits, development etc. If you think something that may in everyone's best is joking then you truly don't understand how your local government works.
Well, pardon me for saying it’s an absolute fantasy to merge Brooklyn and Green Lake. Forgive me for suggesting that’s a laughable idea that will never happen, just like other crazy ideas that Green Lake has had through the years. How's that ice rink coming along? How’s the veteran’s park coming? Go ahead, keep dreaming big, but I say we should discuss relevant concepts and ideas rather than hair-brained fantasies.
I know exactly how local government works. Slow and inefficient. Meaning an idea this large and this controversial will never, ever come to fruition. That’s not to say Green Lake won’t continue to annex small pieces. But Brooklyn will remain its own municipality as long as we and our grandchildren are all alive, be sure.
You must be joking- must be an idiot! Years ago the Town of Brooklyn and the City of Green Lake co-existed just fine, but nowadays money is big business. The city needs to look out for itself, meaning the town is getting too big and powerful. And by the way M.W.is full of it.

The question isn't whether or not we co-exist peacefully. The question is whether the people of these two communities and their government representatives would ever approve such a drastic, unnecessary, controversial merger. I say that'll probably never happen because there would be too much opposition, and because our local governments are too inefficient and self-centered to ever OK such an idea. So again, it'll never happen in my lifetime or even my grandkids' lifetimes. Period.

Hey, if we were going to merge the city and the town, I would rather it all became town and we did away with the city. I live in the city, and would rather pay the property taxes that the town pays than the ridiculous amount of money that I pay just so I can have undrinkable water and garbage pick-up. I love Green Lake but don't love the taxes.
Some of the comments above explain a lot about this area and why it often finds itself the odd one out.
You can choose to plan and prepare for your future, accept that change is inevitable or you can do nothing, look foolish and find yourself always playing catch up to everyone else. Eventually, you won't be able to catch up.

Yes, I have looked at that, but the fact is that this a real case in court that has yet to be resolved. Obama has not yet proved that he is a citizen of the USA.
Any voter who actually has a brain in their head would look at this Obama situation with an urgent degree of seriousness. The liberals apparently don't care who Obama is or truly undertand what it is that he is trying to do to our country. Pull your heads out of your holes, people!

If this were about McCain, the media would be all over this and would not let go until it was proven one way or another. This is outrageous, and we should all be concerned for the future of our country. Think about this: THERE IS NO BACKGROUND CHECK ON THE DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE ??? Hello, I live in Green Lake and am not airing any political agenda. Did you hear me tell anyone to vote for McCain? This information about Obama not proving his citizenship is readily available on the internet to those who are interested. I guess the Obama supporters are afraid of the truth coming out (finally).
It is not about being guilty or innocent, it is about the fact that Obama does not meet the very simple criteria that would qualify him to run for president of the USA. The birth certificate that was posted on the web was a fake, and in fact on one site showed the seal of Hawaii and on another site, it was missing. He has never once produced a vaulted, authentic birth certificate. His own (paternal) grandmother states that she was at his birth in Kenya. Even if Obama was born in Hawaii, he would still be ineligible to run for president because Obama then became a citizen of Indonesia and would have had to go thru immigration (and the entire process of gaining citizenship) upon his return to the USA to become a citizen of our country. In my opinion, this is why he refuses to release his college records, because they would most likely show that he was a foreign citizen when he attended Harvard. Even if he happens to win the election, he will not be permitted to serve as president of the USA unless he can absolutely prove he is in fact a citizen. This case IS IN THE SUPREME COURT as I write this. Believe whatever you want. I prefer to follow the truth.

Barney Frank definitely had a major role in delaying the government's response to the looming crisis. The Congressional Record is an irrefutable source on this...Frank is on record saying that Freddie and Fannie were not in trouble. He derailed a Bush initiative to restrict the activities of these psuedo government agencies.

I believe you are mistaken. The case was thrown out of the district court of Pennsylvania on October 24th, and then immediately filed in the US Supreme Court. This is still an active case that has not yet been decided on. The case is Berg v. Obama, No. 08-cv-04083. This matter isn't going to just go away. The fact that Obama has refused to comply with multiple requests to produce a certified birth certificate is an admission of his non-citizenship. All other candidates have complied with the request except for Obama. This is ridiculous. If he had a valid US birth certificate, he would have handed it over by now to the proper authorities. I for one don't believe that he is a US citizen.
That is very sad if it is true he is not really a U.S. citizen no matter what party you are voting. Why has't it been brought out in the open before this?

candidate for President of the United States?
As long as it took them to place a Senator from Illinois and Minnesota?
The same amount of time to create a large Muslim enclave in Detroit?
The time it took them to build over 2,000 mosques in America?
The same amount of time required to place radical wahabbist clerics in our military and prisons as 'chaplains'?
Find a candidate who can get away with lying about their
father being a 'freedom fighter' when he was actually part of the most corrupt and violent government in Kenya 's history. Find a
candidate with close ties to The Nation of Islam and the violent
Muslim overthrow in Africa , a candidate who is educated among white infidel Americans but hides his bitterness and anger behind a superficial toothy smile. Find a candidate who changes his Indonesian name of Barry Soetoro back to the Muslim name of Barak Hussein Obama, and dares anyone to question his true ties under the banner of 'racism'.
Nurture this candidate in an atmosphere of anti-white American teaching and surround him with Islamic teachers. Provide him with a bitter, racist, anti-white, anti-American wife, and supply him with Muslim middle east connections and Islamic monies. Allow him to be clever enough to get away with his anti-white rhetoric and proclaim he will give $834 billion taxpayer dollars to the Muslim controlled United Nations for use in Africa .
Install the chameleon candidate in an atmosphere of deception because questioning him on any issue involving Africa or Islam would bevv seen as 'bigoted racism'; two words too powerful to allow the citizenry to be informed of facts. Allow your candidate to employ several black racist Nation of Islam Louis Farrakhan followers as members of his Illinois Senatorial and campaign
staffs.
Where is the bloodhound American 'free press' who doggedly
overturned every stone in the Watergate case? Where are our
nation's reporters that have placed every other Presidential
candidate under the microscope of detailed scrutiny; the same
press who pursue Bush's 'Skull and Bones' club or ran other
candidates off with persistent detective and research work?
Why haven't 'newsmen' pursued the 65 blatant lies told by Obama during the Presidential primaries? Where are the stories about this candidate's cousin and the Muslim butchery in Africa?
Since when did our national press corps become weak, timid, and silent? Why haven't they regaled us with the long list of socialists and communists who have surrounded this 'out of nowhere' Democrat candidate or that his church re-printed the Hamas Manifesto in their bulletin, and that his 'close pastor friend and mentor' met with Middle East terrorist Moammar Gaddafi, (Guide of the First of September Great Revolution of the
Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya)?
Why isn't the American press telling us this candidate is supported by every Muslim organization in the world??

our military at a time of global jihad from Muslim nations?

Obama will be the fall of our nation, he stands for everything my father fought against in WWII and Korea, the people he associates with scare me, I keep thinking of the saying "Birds of a feather flock together" and Obama's flock gets bigger and bigger, I'm tired of hearing about how he was 8 yrs old when Bill Ayers did his terrible acts he should not be criticized by Ayers actions when he was 8, well I and other white americans should not be held accountable for bad acts against african americans generations before we were even born! I do beleive that his private donations are coming largely from over seas maybe from the PLO and Al Qaeda and/or associates of these terrorist cells, I also believe they are helping in some way to get him elected it would further their cause. I had a young man at work tell me today he was gonna camp out at the poll Monday night so he vote in the first black president. I was shocked! I said you would vote for him just because he is black? Are you that stupid? He said McCain scared him. I almost fell over, why would a man who served in a war fought for your freedom and was a POW for 5 years scare you? But a man who lied about his name, his religion, his family, and the fact that he is good friend with radical left wing terrorists, that man does not scare you? What the hell has happened here? Why is the media glorifying Obama? He then said well he talks so well and connects with people he says to me. I responded with "yeah, so did adolf hitler." So I realized that this is the mentality of Americans he appeals to, and it is scary to think that he has a really good chance of getting elected because we have an overwhelming amount of stupid people in this country. Maybe stupid is wrong maybe I should say gullable. I hope McCain gets elected and the first thing he should do is put more funding into education, we have got to educate the next generation coming up better than this one other wise we are doomed.

So you think someone like Colin Powell is "stupid"? Do you really think someone in his position would endorse Barak Obama if any of this garbage was true? Think about it people.
Colin Powell would not have endorsed Obama if he (Obama) was white. Call it whatever you want. I call it racism.
