New Tax Assesments

It seems some people are getting some outrageous new tax assessments. I don't understand how the assessments are going up when most property values (not on the lake anyway) are probably going down. Who authorizes these?

State law requires reassessments. It has been seven yeaars since the last City reassesssment.

That is strange--My property has been reassessed every year for the last 15 years. Even when I bought a shed, built a deck, they even assessed me for a half built deck.

This reassessment is about City wide land and improvements. Any time you improve your homwe or yard you will receive a reassessment. That happened to me also, twice in the last 7 years.

I haven't made any improvements and my assessed value went up almost $10,000- how can that be in this real estate market?!?!

Just goes to show you the city and the area want the big Illinois money..Out with the locals ....

We have not made any improvements to our home, and our assessed value went up over $50,000. This is for a regular ranch style home, not a luxury lake home! It is my understanding that yard improvements such as landscaping and gardens do NOT affect the land value. At least, they are not supposed to. In a market where homes are not selling (right here in Green Lake) after 2 or 3 years on the market, with reduced prices, how can the value of our homes be rising? And things could get much worse in our economy, as far as recession and depression. Even if I wanted to sell my house, I probably would not be able to.

I was told that we have 2 years to fight our new assessments, but the sooner we all go forward to do so, the better. Apparently, you cannot compare your home/value/taxes to similar homes in your neighborhood. Also, the assessors do not have to explain how they evaluate your property. What kind of government would allow this? How unfair could this possibly be?

I am questioning why all land values would not raise at the same rate? Why would my land increase in value and my next-door neighbor's would not? What sense does this make?

I went to the open book and found out with my new larger assessment my taxes went down since the mill rate has gone down due to the higher assessments. You may find this to be true also.

I was pleasantly surprised.

The fact is we are paying too many taxes here in Green Lake, period. As a community, we need to join forces and see that CHANGES ARE MADE in our Green Lake SCHOOL SYSTEM.

WE DO NOT NEED A FULL TIME ADMINISTRATOR FOR OUR TINY LITTLE SCHOOL !!! We can easily share with a neighboring school district. This would save many tens of thousands of dollars. Ken Bates salary is much too large, and I personally don't think he's doing a very good job. Yet another teacher has left the school because they cannot stand the administration.

MANY OF OUR SMALLER CLASSES SHOULD BE COMBINED AND SHARE A TEACHER.
8 OR 9 CHILDREN TO A CLASSROOM IS RIDICULOUS! WE TAXPAYERS CANNOT AFFORD THIS LUXURY. These are tough times economically, and this is not a personal issue. Sorry teachers, there are just too many of you in Green Lake.

THE PRINCIPAL SHOULD ALSO BE TEACHING CLASSES, AS NEARLY ALL PRINCIPALS USED TO DO NOT SO LONG AGO. WHAT DOES E JON TRACY DO ALL DAY? Did you know he has a full time administrative assistant? Can you believe this? If he can't handle his own work, the school board should find someone who can.
Honestly, just what exactly does he do all day to justify his salary? Besides alienating students, parents and teachers???

JAN HAUER has been at the school for over 200 years and should be replaced by a younger, contemporary professional who not only understands modern society, will saty in her office, and will work for approximately half that salary of what Jan Hauer earns.

These simple changes would save our school a few hundred thousand dollars per year. Time for change. School board, get busy and quit putting off the inevitable.

All this hoo hah about the reassassments here in Green Lake is totally justified. And all those of you who are now complacent because your taxes were lower due to the lower mill rate... get ready for next year and the year after that - because then when they double, you aren't going to have a leg to stand on! So, Mr or Ms pleasantly surprised, get ready to be mighty po'd in the near future.

I really liked what 'Taxes and school' said about the school situation in Green Lake. Yeah, they fire good people and keep raising the administrators salaries. What a joke! Just ask the citizens of Columbus what they thought of their 'Ken Bates'. Ha, they are laughing there a---'s off that we got stuck with him. They were glad to get rid of him for good! Lucky us.

and alas, several more great teachers, some of whom have been there many years, have jumped the sinking ship... once again it is the students who lose.
