Fourth of July Fireworks

If you haven't contributed anything to the firework fund at the Chamber of Commerce now would be a good time to do it. Checks can be made payable to the Green Lake Fund and sent to the Chamber of Commerce. They are tax deductable.

It's time that the Chamber drops the Summer Solstice event from their annual line-up of activities. Hopefully the new director can see that it simply is not worth the time and effort to continue with it. The entire "festival" is so lame, it is like a mockery of itself. It is obviously just another way for the Chamber to try to make money. With the 4th of July right around the corner, does Green Lake need a festival in June? Let's try for QUALITY, not quantity!

If you don't like it, don't go.

I agree with the first poster, it's a complete joke.

We went once and that was enough, even my kids hated it. There is no self respect or dignity in wearing pajamas in public, howling at the moon or pushing a bed down the street. It is all quite demeaning. Green Lake should try to portray a classy image, not a ludicrous three ring circus act.

Also, it bothers me that the origins of the solstice celebration are pagan and wiccan. As a Christian I strive not to involve myself with the works of darkness or even the image of it. The fact that there was a paid psychic at this years summer solstice confirms in my spirit that my family and I should have nothing to do with such a ritual. You cannot expect God to bless the GL chamber for continuing with this type of thing.

holy yeazel howling at the moon wearing pyjama's and a pagan mask....now there's a tourist attraction!

This year's event was a total bomb. Very unprofessional set up and DJ. People were leaving in droves. Once again lots of people show up and realize there is nothing here.

Again, if you don't like it, don't go. If you are such an expert, put in the time and effort and do it yourself. What a bunch of petty whining.

Most of the people I saw at Summer Solstice looked like they were enjoying themselves. Why are people so negative around here?

Anonymous said...

Yes I am an expert,I would love to get involved, but you jackasses control everything around here. You should pay more attention to your kids so they don't grow up to be jackasses. Oops too late they already are.

To the 3:48 posting, why is honoring the changing of the seasons dark? I think it is instinctive if you love the land, and joyful.

I do honor the changing of the seasons, it is one of the things I love about living in Wisconsin. Standing around and drinking beer is not honoring the seasons, nor is pushing a bed down the street. I am just saying that the Chamber should discontinue the event, and try something else if they need to earn money so desperately. The solstice is a flop every year, and yet they keep doing it anyway. How about some fresh new ideas?

To the poster who says if you don't like it, then don't go, you have it exactly right. People don't like it, and they don't go. Dah.

Crabby Appleton, if you don't like it around here, then go somewhere else.

Solstices occur twice a year, when the tilt of the Earth's axis is most orientated toward or away from the Sun, causing the Sun to reach its northernmost and southernmost extremes. The name is derived from the Latin sol (sun) and sistere (to stand still), because at the solstices, the Sun stands still in declination; that is, its apparent movement north or south comes to a standstill.

The term solstice can also be used in a wider sense, as the date (day) that such a passage happens. The solstices, together with the equinoxes, are connected with the seasons. In some languages they are considered to start or separate the seasons; in others they are considered to be centre points (in English, in the Northern hemisphere, for example, the period around the June solstice is known as midsummer, and Midsummer's Day is 24 June, about three days after the solstice itself). Similarly 25 December is the start of the Christmas celebration, which was a Pagan festival in pre-Christian times, and is the day the sun begins to return back to the northern hemisphere.

Why should I go somewhere else? I live here, work here, and pay my taxes here. I am trying to point out the problems I observe in my travels. It's the people like you that continue to make this area dis-functional.I am tired of everyone 's answers. "If you don't like it go somewhere else".

Crabby Appleton, you must be miserable living here with a bunch of J--------. I don't know how you can put up with it.

Anonymous said...

I can put up with it because I have a power brain. I am so much more intelligent than anyone around me. I stay here because you people do not pose a threat to me. If I live in a larger community I may be cut up, shot, and killed. I am also 86 years old and loving it.

Why are you attacking Crabby Appleton? This blog site is meant to be a constructive outlet to express your views. I for one agree with Crabby and his (her?) comments about the Summer Solstice event. Keep it up, Crabby!

Is name-calling constructive?

FYI - Apparently the Green Lake YMCA is really gaining some steam. Check out the front page of the Ripon paper this week.

It sure would be great to have something like that in our area. It might bring people into town. Oops, didn't mean that. We wouldn't want anything to change in Green Lake would we.

I don't see that a YMCA on the edge of town will bring people into town. There aren't many reasons to go into town unless you can afford a very overpriced meal with your family or have to go to the library.

However, a YMCA would be very good for the area, especially all the chubby kids (and their parents) who obviously aren't getting enough exercise. The YMCA offers great programs, including aquatics (a pool in Green Lake!!) and soccer, a sport that the entire world enjoys except for GL county. Would the GL YMCA offer an ice rink for hockey? A hockey team in this area would give the kids something to do in the winter.

Very nice band concert in the park last night. The weather was perfect and the UW marching band was great as always.
